Trainers with multiple runners in any one race provided Stewards with their intentions prior to the event.
RACE 1 – LADBROKES TOP 2/3/4 BETTING PACE– 2050MS
KATHYS FREE – Showed gate speed to lead the event, however, driver K. Weidenbach elected to take a trail on the back of BOULDER CITY near the 1600 metres. Had difficulty finding a clear run between the 400 metres and the 200 metres, however, utilised the sprint lane when it became available and was fully tested in the final straight.
NITEONTHETOWN – Hung out as the field raced towards the first turn, a warning was issued.
MAJOR ICON NZ – Had difficulty finding a clear run over the final 400 metres and never fully tested in the final straight.
STEREOPHONIC – Had difficulty finding a clear run between the 400 metres and the 200 metres, however, utilised the sprint lane when it became available and was fully tested in the final straight.
WINSTON ALEXANDER - Out of position when the start was effected, will continue to be drawn wide for mobile start events.
RACE 2 – RISDON HOTEL PACE – 1609MS
ROLL WITH MUSTARD – Had a tendency to over-raced when in a trailing position.
NYKEA COURAGE - Had difficulty finding a clear run from the 400 metres, however, able to find clear running near the 100 metres and then fully tested from that point on.
RACE 3 – MIDSTATE HARDWARE PACE – 2050MS
CAVALRY – Had difficulty finding a clear run between the 400 metres and the 200 metres, however, utilised the sprint lane when it became available and was fully tested in the final straight.
JAWSOFGOODTIME – Inconvenienced near the 300 metres when TUFFTIGER shifted out, when racing on its inside.
TUFFTIGER – Shifted out near the 300 metres, making contact to the near side front foot of JAWSOFGOODTIME, which was racing on its outside, as a consequence flattened the off-side tyre on the sulky.
PIRATESOF ZANZIBAR – Gave ground from the 400 metres to eventually be beaten 84.0 metres, placed on its last chance to race competitively.
CLARENDEN VICTORY - Had difficulty finding a clear run between the 400 metres and the 200 metres, however, when clear was fully tested in the final straight.
RACE 4 – SPILLMAN AIR PACE – 1609MS
LOVE OF THE SEA – Tired over the concluding stages to eventually be beaten 64.0 metres, a warning was issued.
SANTIAGO LOU – Hung in and broke gait free of interference near the 1300 metres, a warning was issued.
ALBYNITE – Driver B. Page was reprimanded under Rule 162(1)(h) for failing to come up into position.
RACE 5 – H & P HIRE PACE – 2050MS
SPORTSFLIGHT – Gave ground from the 500 metres to eventually be beaten 166.0 metres. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had mild lameness in its near fore leg and was stood down until the completion of one satisfactory requalifying trial and a veterinary certificate of soundness.
DALLAS DALE NZ – Broke gait free of interference and was out of position as the start was effected, will be drawn wide in future mobile start events. Stewards fined trainer F. Pullicino was fined $50 under Rule 210 for a late driver change.
TOMMY MACH – Inconvenienced in the score up when DALLAS DALE NZ, which was drawn to his inside, shifted out and then broke gait in the later stages of the score up. Showed gate speed to lead the event, however, driver B. Page elected to take a trail on the back of HI FILANTE near the 1500 metres. Utilised the sprint lane when it became available and was fully tested in the final straight.
HI FILANTE – Stewards questioned Driver S. Turner regarding the tactics he adopted, in particular his decision to move wider on the track near the 500 metres, after being unable to hold the lead and being crossed by DALAS DALE, the providing an inside run to the eventual winner TOMMY MACH.
S. Tuner explained that he believed the gelding performs better when he is in clear running and thought if DALAS DALE came back to the field he would be in a better position on his outside rather than waiting for the sprint lane he also stated that the horse had been driven similar in previous starts and had performed well. Stewards noted Mr Turners comments, however, suggested remaining on the marker pegs would have been more advantageous and his decision lacked judgement.
RACE 6 – CLM QUARRIES PACE – 1609MS
No racing incidents to report.
