Stewards questioned driver Joshua Gallagher with regards to the performance of the colt which tired over the final 500 metres of the event before finishing in 7th placing beaten 28 metres. Mr Gallagher explained that they felt the best option in tonight’s event was to take up the lead however in hindsight he believes the colt may race better when driven with a sit. Mr Gallagher further advised stewards that connections were very disappointed with the performance of the colt this evening and explained that the colt would now likely go for a spell and be freshened up for a tilt at the Chariots of Fire. Post race veterinary examination of the colt revealed it to have tied up. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Gallagher stewards determined note his comments and take no further action.

Driver Grace Panella pleaded guilty to a charge under rule 156(2)(a), in that she applied the whip to the gelding in the home straight in a manner which was considered not to be a wrist only flicking motion. After considering the recent record of Miss Panella, she was fined $400 and her licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of 7 days.

DANCE FOR GLORY– Momentarily placed in restricted room approaching the 350 metres when JOHNSON STEP NZ was shifted wider on the track. Stewards questioned driver David Morris with the tactics he adopted in the event, in particular his decision to leave a position on the marker pegs approaching the 1300 metres and as a result commence to race outside the leader forward of stablemate AALESUND. Mr Morris advised stewards that he had been provided no instructions by trainer KerryAnn Morris but felt given the gelding is very one paced and more of a grinder that given the slow lead time and early stages of the first quarter he felt it would be more beneficial to the gelding racing up on the speed rather than with cover on the marker pegs. Mr Morris further advised that when he elected to come wider and quicken the gelding kicked it’s off side sulky wheel and as a result commenced to over race. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Morris stewards determined to note his comments and take no further action.
