Mr Callaghan was fined $200 after considering his plea, record in relation to the rule and the circumstances of the incident. Stewards questioned Trainer J Grimson in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the gelding when successful in tonight’s event. Mr Grimson explained it was the first run for his stable and he had been impressed with the gelding’s work since Mr Grimson had returned from New Zealand and was not surprised by the gelding’s performance. Stewards questioned Trainer/Driver S Grima in relation to the performance of the mare when finishing in 5th position beaten 5.2 metres ($4.20). Mr Grima explained where possible he had been trying to space the mare’s runs as in his opinion the mare appears to race best when able to have some space between runs. Mr Grima added the mare had recently been successful and run a personal best and felt it may have flattened the mare.

HAS THE COURAGE– Stewards questioned Trainer/Driver K Morris in relation to the tactics adopted in particular her decision to improve three wide in the event and look to challenge for the lead between the 1500 metres and 1300 metres. Mrs Morris explained the tempo of the event at this stage was slow, with the lead time being recorded in 51.1 seconds and the first quarter being recorded in 30.1 seconds. Mrs Morris added if she hadn’t improved her drive at this stage the tempo of the event wouldn’t have quickened and with the tempo being so slow and racing back in the field she did not feel this would benefit her drive. HAS THE COURAGE hung in at various stages throughout the event.
