Leaving the 150 metres hang out sharply when under pressure. A warning was issued. Withstood a protest from the connections of GLIDING AWAY NZ which was placed second past the post. Post race swab samples were obtained.

GLIDING AWAY NZ– Driver L Green on behalf of connections of GLIDING AWAY NZ lodged a protest alleging interference over the final 250 metres. After considering all available evidence it was established that leaving the 150 metres as GLIDING AWAY NZ was attempting to establish a run to the outside of FOCUS STRIDE when that runner hung out in the vicinity of two sulky widths which caused GLIDING AWAY NZ to be hampered. Then from a point approaching the 100 metres GLIDING AWAY NZ established its running to the outside of FOCUS STRIDE to be beaten a half neck. Stewards concluded that given the proximity of the incident to the finish, the manner in which both runners were finishing the race off and the degree of interference they could not be satisfied to the required standard that had the interference not occurred that GLIDING AWAY NZ would have finished ahead of FOCUS STRIDE therefore the protest was dismissed and the all clear was given on the judges numbers of 1, 2, 3 and 5.

He added that no sooner had he taken up this position that BRIGHT ENERGY dropped the bit and he was unable to get the gelding to respond to his driving. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. RACE 8 – AINSWORTH GAME TECHNOLOGY PACE – 1609 metres

STRADDIE – Raced outside of the leader throughout the event and weakened over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities however the gelding did bite its tongue during the event. When questioned, driver J Callaghan explained that it was the intention of connections to drive the gelding forward at the start. He said that he was beaten for early speed and STRADDIE was inclined to lay in and required to be driven with vigour for him to improve. He added that he worked forward from the 1200 metres when YIANNI had crossed to the lead and the tempo had been steadied. J Callaghan stated that C Hart the driver of YIANNI, gave the impression he would take cover. However, when he improved to the outside of YIANNI that runner commenced to overrace despite the efforts of its driver to restrain it. Subsequentlywhen it became apparent near the 900 metres that STRADDIE could not muster sufficient speed to cross to the lead J Callaghan stated that he immediately steadied his runner. J Callaghan explained that post race discussions with trainer C Ross, he was unable to provide an explanation for the performance and indicated that he would have to experiment with gear changes in an attempt to have the gelding travel better during its races. STRADDIE was placed on its last chance to race truly for what was deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance with an individual mile rate of 1.54.7.

SWAGGIE SHANNON- Underwent a pre and post race veterinary examination as per HRNSW Animal Welfare Guidelines. No abnormalities were detected.
