SAHARA TIGER– Stewards questioned driver Abby Sanderson with regards to SAHARA TIGER locking wheels with STINGRAY TARA NZ passing the 400 metres causing STINGRAY TARA NZ to be checked and break stride. Miss Sanderson advised Stewards that NYACK, driven by James Rattray which was racing forward of her runner approaching the 400 metres had commenced to shift wider into a three wide position and in doing so she anticipated a run opening to the inside of that runner and commenced to improve into the run where at a similar point forward of her PETE SAID SO NZ driven by Robert Morris had commenced to shift up the track looking for clear running and in doing so had been followed by STINGRAY TARA NZ being driven by Blake Fitzpatrick and as a result of the gap between STINGRAY TARA NZ and NYACK diminishing, in addition to SAHARA TIGER hanging in, SAHARA TIGER locked wheels with STINGRAY TARA NZ. After considering the explanation provided by Miss Sanderson Stewards determined report the incident.

MAMMALS ALIBI– Stewards questioned driver Jett Turnbull with regards to the tactics he adopted throughout the early and middle stages of the event, whereby he elected to improve three wide from the 1100 metres and continued to race wide for the remainder of the event. Mr Turnbull advised Stewards that he was provided instructions by trainer Nathan Turnbull to make a decision in the early stages based on the speed of other runners whether to drive the runner forward early or alternatively look for a position in the running line and if the speed came out of the event look to improve to the position outside the leader. Mr Turnbull explained that he felt approaching the 1100 metres that the tempo of the event had slackened and he therefore looked to improve three wide as per the instructions provided by Mr Nathan Turnbull however he felt that MAMMALS ALIBI did not move quick enough around the field and as result he was stuck racing three wide for the remainder of the event. Mr Turnbull further advised that when previously driving MAMMALS ALIBI the gelding had been able to make a mid-race move and find the position outside the leader quite easily in its races. After reviewing the replays of the event Mr Turnbull conceded that he had made an incorrect decision passing the 1100 metres and the tempo had not slackened as much as he thought and therefore made it difficult for the gelding to improve sufficiently down the back straight to occupy the position outside the leader prior to reaching the 600 metres. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Turnbull Stewards determined to take no further action on the count of Mr Turnbull’s inexperience driving at Menangle however Mr Turnbull was advised to ensure he has an alternative plan when things do not go as expected during races. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RAKAJED NZ– Hung in between the 600 metres and the 400 metres. Stewards questioned driver Brian Portelli with regards to the performance of the gelding which tired over the concluding stages to finish in tenth placing beaten 39 metres. Mr Portelli advised Stewards that the gelding over raced in the early stages of the event before just completely switching off rounding the final turn. Mr Portelli further advised that potentially the 2300 metres at Menangle could be a bridge too far for the gelding. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Portelli, Stewards determined to note his comments.
