Trainers with multiple horses engaged in any given race were questioned as to the intended driving tactics to be adopted.
RACE 1 – HERO BATTLE OF THE CLAIMERS (HEAT) (1720 MS)
Pre and post race veterinary examinations were conducted on Pocket Thedeal NZ under the HRV horse welfare policy due to the gelding racing on more than 200 previous occasions. Both inspections cleared the gelding of any obvious abnormalities.
No reportable incidents.
RACE 2 – TAB RISING STARS PACE (1ST HEAT) (2240 MS)
Stat Hunter was out of position at the start despite the efforts of its driver and a warning was issued against its barrier manners.
Driver Rebecca Bartley (Its Ebonynivory) was cautioned for tightening the racing room of Prosecco Boy when directing her driver to the marker pegs at approximately the 300m.
RACE 3 – WOODLANDS STUD THE GRADUATE (2240 MS)
Major Major pulled hard during the early and middle stages while racing on the peg line with cover.
No action was taken against driver David Moran (Khafaji) after completing the first quarter in 32.4 seconds while leading. In taking this approach stewards took into consideration the weather and track conditions with heavy rain falling just before and during the race.
Nineteenth Man underwent a post-race veterinary and endoscopic examination which revealed the gelding had suffered Grade 3 EIPH. Under the circumstances Nineteenth Man was stood down from racing for a period of 28 days, until a veterinary clearance is provided, and the gelding trials to the satisfaction of stewards on one occasion.
RACE 4 –DNR LOGISTICS 2YO PACE (1720 MS)
Heathbern Bruce hung out during the score up and was out of position at the start. Given the geldings recent barrier manners, Heathbern Bruce was placed on its last chance in the mobile barrier draw. Heathbern Bruce continued to hang out during the early stages after restraining to a position on the peg line.
RACE 5 -BENSTUD STANDARDBREDS QUEEN OF THE PACIFIC (GROUP 1) (2760 MS)
Trainer Jack Trainer (Breaview Kelly NZ) was cautioned for failing to have the registration assessment certificate available for inspection of this mare.
Common Courtesy hung out during the early stages of the score up, as the start was affected Common Courtesy hung out again shortly after. This mare will be given one last chance in the mobile barrier draw.
Drivers Abbey Turnbull, (Aunty Bella), and Anthony Butt, (Breaview Kelly NZ), were questioned regarding the reasons for Aunty Bella galloping when crossed by Breaview Kelly NZ prior to leaving the back straight on the first occasion. After taking evidence from both drivers and upon review of the available replays it was established that Aunty Bella had shifted in, when attempting to cross Common Courtesy and had to be corrected out by driver Abby Turnbull. It was also established that as Braeview Kelly NZ improved forward and across to lead, Aunty Bella had galloped without any interference from Braeview Kelly NZ. Trailing runners, Jenden Stride was checked and galloped. Its Beaujolais and Ladies In Red were both checked and Mona Mia was also in convinced as a consequence. Under the circumstances Aunty Bella was placed on its last chance to race truly.
After working to the lead approaching the 1600m, Ladies in Red shifted in contacted and dislodged a marker peg at the 1200m.
RACE 6 – LOGICAL STAFFING SOLUTIONS PACE (2240 MS)
No reportable incidents.
RACE 7 – CATANACH'S JEWELLERS 4YO & 5YO CHAMPIONSHIP (GROUP 2) (2240 MS)
Jason Grimson (Fire Fox NZ) was cautioned for failing to have a registration assessment certificate available for inspection for this gelding.
It was noted that Beyond Delight, raced fiercely approaching the 1300m and was taken wider momentarily by its driver before restraining back to a position in the one out line at the rear of the field.
Cherokee Joe contacted the final marker peg prior to the entrance to the home straight.
Drivers Greg Sugars (Better Eclipse), Jodi Quinan (Act Now) and David Moran (Narutac Prince) were questioned regarding the reasons Narutac Prince galloped as it crossed the finish line at the conclusion of the race. After taking evidence from all drivers and viewing the available replays, Driver Greg Sugars (Better Eclipse) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 162(1)(www)(b) for hindering the run of Narutac Prince after he failed to ensure his drive maintained a straight course over the concluding stages after shifting in slightly resulting in Act Now being taken in towards Narutac Prince which contacted the final marker peg prior to the winning post and galloped. Acting under the HRV minimum penalty guidelines and associated considerations Mr Sugars was fined $200.
La Captain was held up for a clear run rounding the final turn and during the early stages of the home straight.
Narutac Prince was examined by the club veterinarian post race who reported the horse had a small laceration on the off foreleg. Narutac Prince was stood down for a period of 7 days on veterinary advice.
RACE 8 – ALLIED EXPRESS PACE) (2240 MS)
Jilliby Nitro was fractures during the early stages of the score up and despite the efforts and attempts of driver Jason Lee to restrain the gelding Jillby Nitro contacted the mobile barrier arm resulting in Foolish Pleasure being checked and gallop. Jillaby Nitro was placed outside the draw in future mobile start races.
Sanday pulled hard in the middle stages when leading.
Jillaby Nitro was held up for a clear run rounding the final turn and commenced to jostle with Allshookup approaching the 200m resulting in Jillaby Nitro racing rough briefly. Driver Jason Lee then directed the gelding back towards the sprint lane to obtain a clear run in the home straight.
RACE 9 – TAB RISING STARS PACE (2ND HEAT) (2240 MS)
Bee Gee Cee was a late scratching at 1.22pm on Veterinary advice.
Captain Pins NZ was out of position at the start and will continue out of the draw in future mobile start races.
Driver John Caldow (Musztang) was cautioned for his lack of control after Musztang commenced to shift out under pressure in the home straight after leading.
