RACE 2 – VHRC CADUCEUS CLASSIC (GROUP 2) (1720 MS)

LIKE A WILDFIRE– Driver Mark Pitt was questioned regarding his driving tactics, in particular as to surrendering the lead in the middle stages. Driver Pitt stated despite having an inside draw he had to work a little bit more than he expected in the early stages when HECTOR NZ showed speed to his inside. Thereafter after when entering the straight approaching the bell PERFECT CLASS improved from three wide to his outside and showed intent to lead. Mindful of the early work he had done he did not feel it was in the best interests of his horse to further place it under pressure some 1100m from the finish. He believed he would be better served by allowing his horse to take a sit, take a “breather” and follow the leader. He also felt that he would be able to utilize the sprint lane and outsprint the leader. As the field approached the turn into the home straight, he began to drive his horse along, but the gelding initially did not respond as expected. Then despite obtaining the sprint lane despite his urgings it did not sprint as quickly as he had anticipated. His explanations were noted
