Stewards Report
Gloucester Park 07/06/2024
Stewards: B Lewis, P Webster (MT), R Mance (SR/HE)
Assistants: K Reeves (Starter/Gear), W Best (Mobile/Brands)
Veterinary Surgeon: Drs M McGregor, E Vidler
Weather: Overcast
Track: Good
Trainers with multiple runners in any one race were questioned in relation to their intended tactics.
RACE 1 – SPORT FM 91.3 PACE (2130MS)
All clear was delayed to allow Stewards to review the vision in relation to the second placed LINEBBACKER NZ (C Voak) breaking gait over the concluding stages. After reviewing the vision, it was determined that LINEBACKER NZ did not gain any advantage after breaking gait and as such all clear was issued. Driver C Voak explained that the horse reacted to casting its off fore shoe near the 50m and consequently broke gait. Mr Voak’s explanation was confirmed from the vision and in such circumstances no action was taken against LINEBACKER NZ.
RACE 2 – COWDEN THE INSURANCE BROKERS PACE (2130MS)
Drivers G Hall Jnr (YOURE SO FINE NZ) and R Warwick (NAVY STREET) were questioned in relation to their tactics adopted through the early stages, in particular the reason for setting a fast pace through the early stages and recording a lead time of 35.6 seconds and a first quarter of 27.4 seconds which resulted in both runners establishing a considerable margin on the remainder of the field before then tiring and finishing in second last and last positions and recording beaten margins of 34.40 metres and 94.90 metres respectively. After taking evidence from both drivers and reviewing the vision, the inquiry was adjourned to a time and date to be arranged to allow Stewards to consider the evidence put forward and review the previous racing patterns of both horses and to conduct an analysis of betting records on the race.
RACE 3 – PRINDIVILLE CLASSIC PACE (2130MS)
SPORT SPORT SPORT (T Wheeler) – Out of position at the start. Driver T Wheeler was fined $100 under HR162(1)(i) for failing to come up to the starting gate by the time the candy pole is reached.
SOVRANA (A De Campo) – Out of position at the start. Driver A De Campo was fined $100 under HR162(1)(i) for failing to come up to the starting gate by the time the candy pole is reached.
ADORE ME SOME MORE (C Voak) – Gear Change-Sliding blocks On. Trainer Mr C Voak was fined $50 under HR273(6)(b) for presenting the mare to race in gear that was not notified to the Stewards.
STORMYSKYES (S Steele) – Locked wheels for a short distance at the turn into the front straight on the final occasion with SOVRANA (A De Campo).
SISTER CHERIE NZ (R Warwick) – Steadied and shifted outwards away from STORMYSKYES (S Steele) at the turn into the front straight on the final occasion.
BLAZE COOPS (D Egerton-Green) – Gave ground from the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
General: Driver A De Campo (SOVRANA) was reprimanded for careless driving under HR168(1)(a) for allowing SOVRANA to shift up the track at the turn into the front straight on the final occasion and locking wheels with STORMYSKYES (S Steele) with SISTER CHERIE NZ (R Warwick) being taken outwards.
RACE 4 – SUPPORT VARIETY CLUB WA PACE (1730MS)
No racing incidents to report.
RACE 5 – THE PURE STEEL PACE (2130MS)
MAUNGATAHI (T Wheeler) – Inconvenienced by another runner in the early stages of the score up and consequently was not in position by the candy pole.
RACE 6 – COWDEN INSURANCE SOLUTIONS PACE (2130MS)
WILDWEST NZ (G Hall Jnr) – Driver G Hall Jnr was questioned in relation to his driving tactics in relinquishing the lead to DIEGO NZ (M Brown) in the back straight on the first occasion. Mr Hall Jnr explained that he had driven WILDWEST vigorously for a considerable distance through the early stages in an attempt to cross to the lead, however GALACTIC STAR was driven along to maintain the lead resulting in WILDWEST NZ not being able to cross GALACTIC STAR NZ until approaching the winning post on the first occasion and consequently a fast lead time of 35.0 seconds was recorded. Mr Hall Jnr added that in such circumstances he believed his best option was to relinquish the lead to DIEGO ( M Brown) which was improving forward to his outside rather than continue to drive along and place the gelding under further pressure to hold the lead which in his opinion would compromise its finishing effort and by taking cover the gelding would be better positioned to finish off the race more strongly. He further added that after taking WILDWEST NZ outwards from 400m he was confident of its winning prospects, however it did not quicken as well as he expected. Stewards adjourned the inquiry to consider the evidence put forward by Mr Hall Jnr and to review betting records from the race.
GALACTIC STAR NZ (D Egerton-Green) – Driver D Egerton-Green raised his hand towards his helmet in the back straight on the first occasion when WHILE THEY PRAY (L Harper) which was following and over-racing got its head over and past his helmet and he explained such action as being a safety measure to discourage WHILE THEY PRAY from continuing to move its head further forward and contact his helmet.
RACE 7 – SPORT FM 91.3 CONDITIONED PACE (2130MS)
THE MIKI TAKER (A De Campo) – Driver A De Campo was fined $400 under HR156(2)(a) for using his whip in more than a flicking motion. In assessing penalty Stewards considered Mr De Campo’s recent record under the rule and that he won the race.
DOMINUS FACTUM (T Wheeler) – Over-raced when racing outside the leader and gave ground from the 300m.
ROLLING FIRE (E Suvaljko) – Driver E Suvaljko was fined $300 under HR156(2)(a) for using her whip in more than a flicking motion. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account her recent record under the rule.
RACE 8 – OWDEN THE INSURANCE BROKERS TROT (2503SS)
STAY FOCUSED (E Suvaljko) – Slow to begin. Will continue to remain out of the draw for standing start events. Checked in the front straight to receive the bell.
POSSEIDON (R Warwick) – Broke gait in the front straight to receive the bell and was then retired from the race. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed it to be lame in the off foreleg. A veterinary certificate of soundness is required prior to the gelding racing or trialling again.
RACE 9 – SUPPORT VARIETY CLUB WA PACE (2130MS)
FORMEL (S Young) – Broke gait leaving the back straight on the first occasion. Will now be stood down from racing for a period of 6 days and until the completion of a satisfactory re-qualifying trial. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly revealed no abnormalities.
RACE 10 – COWDEN 1ST FOR INSURANCE PACE (2130MS)
FLAMING CULLEN (K Harper) – Broke gait at the start. The gelding will now be placed out of the draw for future mobile events.
