ROCKINROLL SPIRIT – Gave ground from the 800 metres to eventually be beaten 361.0 metres. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had suffered an atrial fibrillation and was stood down for 14 days, along with an ECG and one satisfactory requalifying trial, in accordance with Rule 101C(2)(a).

FRANCO LANDRY NZ – Showed gate speed to lead the event, however, driver D. Girardi elected to take a trail on the back of FRANCO LANDRY NZ near the 1400 metres. Stewards questioned driver D. Girardi regarding the tactics he adopted, in particular his decision to surrender the lead near the 1400 metres, to DON ARTHUR, as well as the fact he did not utilise the sprint lane when it became available. D. Girardi stated that believed DON ARTHUR was a good horse to follow but in hindsight it may have been more advantageous to hold the lead himself, especially considering when he did look to go into the sprint lane FRANCO LANDRY was reluctant to shift into the sprint lane, then he noticed an opening starting to present itself and went to drive into it, however, the run never fully materialised and he was unable to find a clear run over the concluding stages. D. Girardi also stated that in future, based on tonights performance, it would be his intention to hold the lead in future. Stewards noted his explanation however advised D. Girardi that horses must be driven consistently and FRANCO LANDRY is a horse that would normally hold the lead and there could be consequences if he did not place his runner in the best position to win or finish in the best possible placing in the field.

Hill regarding the racing tactics she adopted, in particular, her decision not to move three-wide with a trail in the back straight and instead drive up between runners. D. Hill stated that in hindsight it was the right option to move wider, however, she did not want to be the first to go three wide near the 800 metres and work around the field, as she was mindful of the work LAST TANGO IN HEAVEN NZ had to do early in the race and then when she saw an opening that would allow her to run up onto the back of ALL DA RAGE near the 600 metres she thought that was the best option for her and believed she would be able to find clear running through the final turn, however, that did not eventuate. D. Hill stated that ultimately, she was disappointed with her decision making, but believed she was doing what she thought was her best option at the time, to ensure LAST TANGO IN HEAVEN NZ was competitive at the finish. Stewards noted her explanation and did not believe her drive was culpable, however, agreed that moving three-wide with a trail in the back straight was the best option to ensure she was able to have clear running in the final straight.
