ROSE OF JULIANA– When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted in the early and middle stages, trainer/driver Mr A Clancy explained, that despite his wide barrier draw he intended to obtain the position outside the lead in the early stages. He said that he determined this course of action because in his opinion runners drawn to his inside had inferior gate speed to his drive. He said that after the start he drove with urgency and despite being wide on the track he had raced forward of NICKALONG MINT and FAKE MINT, which were drawn inside and entering the back straight he was confident that he would achieve his pre-race plan. He said that in the back straight he drove forward in an effort to cross SAFE JEWELS, however that runner improved inside him to race almost level with the leader, which resulted in him being caught wide for longer than he envisaged. He stated that he again placed his drive under pressure approaching the turn out of the back straight on the first occasion as he felt the driver of SAFE JEWELS would relinquish and adopt the position of cover in the running line. He said that when this did not eventuate he was 3 wide with a lap remaining and at this point he felt that restraint to obtain cover would have taken too long and been disadvantageous, therefore he allowed the mare to travel without further pressure in its uncovered position. He said that when placed under pressure inside the 500m the mare could not improve, however despite its finishing position it had performed as well as its previous best runs given the unsatisfactory circumstances. Mr Clancy was told that whilst his pre-race plan had merit, when he was unable to cross SAFE JEWELS after initial challenge, he should have been mindful of other options which may have been available and whilst on this occasion his tactics were not deemed mistakes to the point of being blameworthy, he must at all times drive his runners in a manner that left no room for query. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
