HARNESS RACING VICTORIA

STEWARDS REPORT FOR CRANBOURNE

SUNDAY 14 JULY 2024

Daniel Borg (Chairman)
Thomas Bick
Chris Sullivan
Barry Delaney (Starter)
Dr Nicholas Branson (Veterinarian)

Track: Good
Weather: Overcast

Trainers with multiple horses engaged in any given race were questioned as to the intended driving tactics to be adopted

RACE 1 – COME & JOIN CRANBOURNE CLUB 21 PACE (2080 MS)

AUREUS – trainer Jess Tubbs cautioned for not advising dual-runner tactics by the prescribed time.

NO WIN NO WORRIES – pulled hard score-up. Tired to be beaten 52.3m into eleventh and last placing; no action taken given the margins between the placings and the overall mile rate.

YOUNGGIFTEDANDBLACK NZ – gave ground to be beaten 37.9m into eighth placing. Post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Stewards intend to follow-up with connections in the coming days as to the mare’s recovery.

FIGHTER COMMAND – equalled the track record.

Stewards queried drivers James Herbertson (MAJOR MANBAR) and Ellen Tormey (THE ONLY DECISION NZ) regarding an incident heading into the first turn where it appeared MAJOR MANBAR was checked and subsequently galloped. After evidence from both drivers and viewing several angles of the patrol films Stewards concluded that when being driven forward from the second row by Mr Herbertson, MAJOR MANBAR raced roughly, hung outward and contributed to crowding received when Ms Tormey directed THE ONLY DECISION NZ inward marginally when attempting to gain the position behind the leader TARAS VICTORY NZ (Scott Ewen). Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that blame was attributable to a sole party and the racing incident was noted as such. MAJOR MANBAR underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed a laceration above the gelding’s off-fore foot with treatment administered and a standdown period of seven (7) days applied.

RACE 2 – DECRON CRANBOURNE 10000 PACE (1ST HEAT) (2080 MS)

MISTIE REIGN – pulled hard score-up.

CALEDONIAN RANGER – sulky contacted by THESTATESMAN at approx. 100m.

Stewards questioned drivers Chris Alford (THESTATESMAN) and Taylor Youl (ILLAWONG DANNY) regarding an incident at approx. 175m where it appeared ILLAWONG DANNY was checked and galloped as a result. Mr. Alford explained that after THESTATESMAN raced keenly in a marker peg position through the middle stages he angled his drive away from the marker pegs at approx. 200m only to then be trailing TRINITYS DELIGHT (John Caldow) who was yielding ground at the time. Mr. Alford then angled THESTATESMAN one position wider onto the back of CALEDONIAN RANGER (Ross Payne) and in that movement THESTATESMAN; whilst continuing to pull hard, overreacted, and shifted outward despite the efforts of Mr Alford, causing ILLAWONG DANNY to be checked and subsequently break gait. Given the racing manners of THESTATESMAN, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that Mr. Alford was culpable in the circumstances; thereby noting the racing incident. THESTATESMAN was issued with a warning for collective behaviors.

RACE 3 – HYGAIN CRANBOURNE 10000 PACE (2ND HEAT) (2080 MS)

AUSSIEPRIDE – the training partnership Butt and Smith were cautioned for not advising dual runner tactics by the prescribed time. Galloped approaching the winning post with one lap to run; last chance to race tractably. Post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

BENBULLAN – pulled hard in running.

SHOOBEES SPIRIT – began badly; exclusion from future mobile barrier draws. Trailed the field thereafter.

PRECIOUS BELLE – pulled hard in running.

KARDELSER NZ – checked at approx. 375m by PLATINUM JIVE NZ who had galloped.

PLATINUM JIVE NZ – galloped at approx. 375m; last chance to race tractably.

MON SOLIEL - checked at approx. 375m by PLATINUM JIVE NZ who had galloped.

RACE 4 – AUSIGN SIGNAGE CRANBOURNE 7000 PACE FINAL (1609 MS)

MONSIEUR FLAMEL – driver Connor Clarke was cautioned for allowing his left foot to become removed from the sulky footrest heading into the first turn. Pulled hard through early to middle stages.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by the driver (Scott Ewen) of the second-placed runner across the line (YERING SOHO) against the driver (Lochie Cook) of the first-placed runner across the line (CALYPSO MISTRESS) being declared the winner alleging interference over the concluding stages. Subsequent to submissions from both drivers and viewing several angles of the patrol films Stewards were of the view that after being directed down into the sprint lane by Mr. Ewen, YERING SOHO gains ground on CALPYSO MISTRESS until approx. 90m where a marginal shift inwards from CALPYSO MISTRESS results in both runners locking wheels; with the prevailing view that had the locking of the wheels not occurred, YERING SOHO would have finished ahead of CALYPSO MISTRESS, therefore upholding the protest with the all-clear given on the new numbers of 8 – 1 – 9 – 5. Mr. Cook was cautioned for a lack of control; continuing to drive CALYPSO MISTRESS out to the finish without taking sufficient corrective measures to straighten his drive.

RACE 5 – MARK GURRY & ASSOCIATES TROT (1609 MS)

HES THEMIGHTYSPIN – driver Patrick Tomkinson fined the sum of $100 under AHRR156(3) for using the whip in an unapproved manner, applying the whip to his drive on more occasions than are permitted inside the final 200m. Clear record noted.

NAKEDTRUTH – raced roughly in score-up and was out of position when the start was effected; warning issued. Shifted out under pressure from 200m to finish; warning issued.

DALEY WATERS – galloped at approx. 400m.

SILENT REVERIE – hung in at approx. 400m.

PARIS JAMILLA – galloped at approx. 400m; warning issued owing to recent record.

KYVALLEY PICASSO NZ – began badly; exclusion from future mobile barrier draws. Trailed the field thereafter.

RYMES – galloped in score-up, out of position when start effected; exclusion from future mobile barrier draws. Trailed the field thereafter.

IMPERIAL WHIZ NZ - pre and post-race veterinary examinations in accordance with the HRV Animal Welfare policy having attained 200 or more lifetime starts. No obvious abnormalities detected in either examination.

RACE 6 – ALDEBARAN PARK TROT (2080 MS)

DESIGNER VICI – raced roughly under pressure concluding stages.

ADJURE – tired to be beaten 51.2m into seventh placing; no action taken given the margins between the placings.

BARCARDI SPIRIT - pre and post-race veterinary examinations in accordance with the HRV Animal Welfare policy having not raced in 12 or more months. No obvious abnormalities detected in either examination. Began badly; exclusion from future mobile barrier draws. Galloped at 1250m; trailed the field thereafter.

AGAINST THE BRIDLE – began badly; exclusion from future mobile barrier draws.

KOOGAN – out of position when start effected; warning issued. Tired to be beaten 138.5m into ninth and last placing; stood down pending the completion of one (1) satisfactory trial.

SUNDAYS SHADOW – out of position when start effected; warning issued.

RACE 7 – LATHER UP STANDING @ WOODLANDS STUD 2YO & 3YO PACE (2080 MS)

G B BRAVE NZ – raced roughly after the start; warning issued.

RACE 8 – BLUE HILLS RISE PACE (2080 MS)

ROMANY BROWN – driver Monique Burnett fined the sum of $100 under AHRR156(3) for using the whip in an unapproved manner, applying the whip to her drive on more occasions than are permitted inside the final 200m. Clear record noted.

SELF EXCLUSION – pulled hard in running.
