RACE 1 – MGA INSURANCE BROKERS PACE – 2170 metres

DONNIE MAC– Entering the first turn when being restrained became unbalanced and broke stride. A warning was issued. Approaching the 250 metres was placed in restricted racing room and raced roughly for a short distance when JAZZMIN had hung out.

JAZZMIN– Raced roughly approaching the 1400 metres. Approaching the 250 metres when over racing hung out to the outside wheel of WHEN TO FOLDEM, to avoid contact to that sulky wheel Driver J Locke allowed JAZZMIN to shift up the track slightly placing DONNIE MAC in restricted racing room and as a result that runner raced roughly. At a subsequent inquiry Driver J Locke was issued a reprimand under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for not providing sufficient effort to prevent his runner shifting wider whilst hanging out. Stewards where also mindful of the racing manners of WHEN TO FOLDEM in this incident. Connections were advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of JAZZMIN.

THE REAL ROCKETMAN NZ– Driver G Lee was questioned on the tactics adopted where in the early stages he restrained to the tail of the field where he was  slightly inconvenienced at the 1700 metres when shifting wider to avoid DONNIE MAC who had broke stride, he then elected to continue work forward three wide from the 1600 metres and when unable to find a position in the running line was obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event until tiring over the final 400 metres to finish in 8th and last position beaten 39.6 metres. G Lee stated it was the instruction of Trainer C Eldridge to drive the gelding in a forward position as he appears to be one paced. When being moderate to begin he elected to restrain the gelding in the early stages until being slightly inconvenienced, he then elected to follow POTTER three wide from the 1600 metres where he thought the position outside the leader may be available. When unable to find that position at the 1200 metres he elected to remain racing three wide as the gelding was travelling comfortably. He added when placed under pressure over the final 500 metres the gelding tired due to the hard run afforded to it throughout the event. After viewing the available race day footage and considering the oral evidence, Stewards believed Mr Lee had erred when progressing three wide from the 1600 metres as it would be unreasonable to expect the position outside the leader would be available from POTTER (N Turnbull) at that stage. Due to the circumstances of the race and his relative inexperience, no further action was taken.

J Turnbull stated he was slightly disappointed in the mare, when trailing PARK RUN he was concerned that runner would not take him into the race and as a result elected to make his run from the 700 metres which appeared to be detrimental to the mare’s ability to finish off the race.
