Mr Symington advised he was instructed to drive the mare forward from the start and obtain the lead, if possible, as BACKWARDS FIRST processes high gait speed and it’s normal racing pattern when drawn a front row. Mr Symington advised after obtaining the lead BACKWARDS FIRST failed to settle and commenced to over race despite his efforts to restrained the mare to allow some respite combined with the added pressure when ALTA DOWNS which improved to outside passing the 1200m & ROAD TO RECOVERY which improved to his outside passing the 1000m. Mr Symington advised the mare was placed under pressure passing the 800m before giving ground from the 300m which he contributed to the mares racing manners in over racing. Trainer Nicholas Hargraves confirmed the instructions along with Mr Symington comments to the performance as BACKWARDS FIRST was first up since 14th September 2024 and had only trialled on one (1) occasion prior to the event and would derive benefit from the performance.
ROAD TO RECOVERY – ($4.20 Eq Fav) Driver Joshua Gallagher was queried into the tactics adopted upon the gelding after obtaining the position outside the leader from 1000m & his decision to apply pressure to the leader from the 800m & the overall performance of the gelding which finished in 6th position beaten 22.4m. Mr Gallagher advised he was able to obtain a trail into the event when improving forward when following ALTA DOWNS however due to that runner racing keenly he had to exert the gelding more than anticipated when obtaining the position outside the leader passing the 1000m. Mr Gallagher explained passing the 800m it was apparent the leader BACKWARDS FIRST was under pressure and felt he would be able to work to the lead which he was able to steadily obtaining passing the 600m at which point ROAD TO RECOVERY was travelling well within itself however the gelding was placed under pressure passing the 400m before commencing to weaken approaching the 200m which he contributed to the gelding having to work more than expected when obtaining the position outside the leader. Mrs Hurst advised after recording a quick first quarter she elected to obtain cover on FOUR STAR LINCOLN which she felt was the best credential runner in the event when it improved forward to allow her runner some respite. After viewing the available replays which confirmed Mrs Hursts comments Stewards noted her explanation. Driver Angela Hurst pleaded guilty to a charge under AHR Rule 156(2)(a) for applying the whip to the mare with more than a wrist flicking action and with overt force. Mr White added the gelding barrier & racing manners have been the main factor to the TAKE HIS PLACE performances in all three (3) starts when either breaking gait at the start or in running.
