RACE 1 – THE TAB APP PACE – 1730 metres

SHEZ SWEET LOUISE NZ– Pre-race blood.  Post-race swab.

UNREAL FEELING– Held up for clear racing room in the run to the finish and not fully tested.

YES YOU MAY– Driver J Coney was questioned on his driving tactics over the final 300 metres in particular when approaching the sprint lane when it became available if it was a possibility for him to shift his runner down the track to obtain that position. YES YOU MAY was held up for clear racing room in the run to the finish and was not fully tested.  He stated when approaching the 250 metres he activated the ear plugs and as a result the gelding raced roughly for a short distance, when approaching the sprint lane he was anticipating ZACHARY SHANNON to shift down the track and he would be able to obtain a run to the outside.  When unable to do so he then looked to shift down to the sprint lane but HAZZA IS WATCHING had improved to his inside and was unable to take that position.  After reviewing the films and taking oral evidence from Mr Coney and representative N Turnbull Stewards do believe Mr Coney had erred by not taking the option of shifting down to the sprint lane when it became available but with his lack of experience driving on tracks with sprint lanes and his acknowledgement of his error of judgement Stewards did not believe the drive be culpable enough to suspend Mr Coney’s licence but issued him with a reprimand under rule 149(2).

GABBYS SPORTSTAR– A pre and post-race veterinary examination were conducted as the gelding has had over 200 race starts.  No abnormalities were detected on either examination.

RACE 2 – STU VALENTINE INSURANCE PACE – 2260 metres

BRACKEN WARRIOR– Driver Harrison Ross could give no reasonable explanation for the gelding’s poor performance where after leading the event was able to obtain cover at the 1600 metres and then failed to run on over the concluding stages to be beaten 39.6 metres.  He did further state the longer trip and when obtaining cover the horse failed to settle with other drivers commenting the gelding to be making unusual breathing noises on finishing the race.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

HOOKED ON WINNING NZ– Broke stride in the early stage of the score up and as a result was out of position at the start.  A warning was issued.  Driver J Turnbull stated that he had to chase the gelding hard in the score up in an attempt to fill his barrier position, the gelding obtained a reasonable run throughout the race then loomed up to win the race at the 200 metres but failed to finish the race off.  He further added that HOOKED ON WINNING NZ can be disappointing in runs when races are not run to suit.

DUSTY JACK– Hung out after the start.  Tired over the concluding 400 metres to be beaten 109.6 metres.  Driver N Turnbull stated with the gelding rising in grade quickly and the long distance of the race proved beyond the horse’s capabilities at this stage of its career.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.  Connections were advised the gelding will be stood down for one requalifying trial.

SPORTY MARY– Post-race swab.

SABELLA SHANNON– Pre-race blood.

RACE 3 – LION NATHAN PACE – 1730 metres

BEAUTY PLAY– Driver W Rixon could give no reasonable explanation for the below par performance of the mare other than being second up she would derive benefit from the run.

SAVEEON – Post-race swab.

ALWAYSBMYPONY– Driver A Delosa was fined the sum of $50 under rule 162(1)(j) for failing to maintain her position behind the barrier prior to the start.

KARINYA GILL– Pre-race blood.

BUDDY BRILLANCE– Driver J O’Shea was queried on the overall performance of the gelding when it failed to run on over the concluding stages to finish in eighth position beaten 14.6 metres.  He stated although being up in grade was slightly disappointing and also having to race outside the leader without cover proved detrimental.

MAJOR ENVY NZ– Driver A Turnbull was queried on the filly’s performance where it appeared to be slightly disappointing over the concluding stages finishing in fifth position beaten 10.7 metres.  Ms Turnbull was disappointed in the run adding that the filly had a tendency to hang in more than usual and as a result hitting its knee.  She further added that the filly may have not backed up from a hard run at Bathurst on 3 July 2024 and the stable would look to freshen the filly up prior to starting again.

RACE 4 – BARKERS BUTCHERY PACE – 1730 metres

ERIC THE KICKER– Post-race swab.

WHATABOYJACK– Pre-race blood.

RACE 5 – KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL PACE – 2260 metres

BELL RIVER BOY– Post-race swab.

THE HANDSOME ONE– During the warm up at the request of driver J Reynolds THE HANDSOME ONE was examined by the on course vet and found to be lame in the near side hind leg.  As a result the gelding was declared a late scratching at 7.08pm on vets advice.  Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be submitted prior to racing again.

FOVEAUX MAJOR NZ– Driver O Frisby could give no reasonable explanation for the gelding tiring over the final 600 metres to be beaten 111.9 metres.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.  The gelding will be stood down for one requalifying trial.

RAINBOW TITAN– Pre-race blood.  Driver B Medlyn was queried on the performance of the gelding when he failed to run on over the concluding stages to finish in seventh position beaten 19.9 metres.  He stated the gelding appears to be better suited to the smaller country tracks and back in grade although the longer distance may have been detrimental in today’s event.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 6 – HYNASH CONSTRUCTIONS PACE – 2260 metres

QUESTRO QUEEN NZ– Pre-race blood.

PRINCE PARKER– Tired over the final 400 metres to be beaten 60 metres.  Driver H Ross was extremely disappointed in the gelding’s run tonight and believes the stable may have a virus going through it.  Connections were advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s manners.

DONT TELL PHYLLIS– Raced roughly shortly after the start.  A warning was issued.

PAYROLL– Pre-race blood.

KARINYA MAX– Tired over the final 500 metres to finish in ninth position beaten 88.5 metres.  Trainer/driver N Hurst stated that with the gelding over racing outside the leader over the longer distance and the track surface appearing to be heavy proved to be detrimental to the gelding’s overall performance.  KARINYA MAX will be given its last chance to race truly.

WATTOSBLAZEOFGLORY– Post-race swab.

RACE 7 – BLINDS BY DESIGN MAIDEN PACE – 1730 metres

ATTRIA– Pre-race blood.  Tired over the final 600 metres to finish in tenth and last position beaten 143.3 metres.  Driver A Turnbull stated the filly was extremely disappointing but believed she may have tied up throughout the race.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly 2 out of 5 lame in the near side hind leg and was also showing signs of tying up.  A vet certificate prior to trialling or racing to be submitted  also requalify on one occasion.

PHANTOM STAR– Driver J Reynolds was queried on the tactics adopted in the early stages in particular the first quarter being run in 27.7 seconds and if there was an opportunity to restrain the gelding and get a more economical second quarter (30.1 seconds).  He stated he was unaware the first quarter was being run as fast as posted but when finding the lead was reluctant to restrain too much as the gelding has had a tendency to over race and choke down.  He further added the gelding would derive benefit from the run as it was first up for a considerable amount of time.  Stewards noted Mr Reynolds comments but advised him to ensure he drives his runners in a manner which are within the capabilities of each horse.

SHEZ A PUNTER– Post-race swab.

SONNY WRITER– Approaching the 800 metres became unbalanced and broke stride.  Considering the gelding’s recent record SONNY WRITER will be stood down for a period of 14 days and furthermore must requalify on two occasions.  At the request of connections the gelding will be placed back in the mobile barrier draw.
