General: Doug Hewitt was questioned regarding the driving tactics adopted on Montgomery Burns NZ. The gelding after being caught wide early was urged forward to lead the one-wide line near the 1100m before again being urged forward by the driver leaving the 1000m when The Janitor moved up three wide. Montgomery Burns NZ obtained the position in the lead approaching the 800m but was under pressure approaching the 400m and finished in 2nd last position beaten 58.3 metres. Mr Hewitt advised that he was concerned that The Janitor would continue its forward move and obtain the lead which would have left his gelding racing without cover and as such was of the view it would be a better option to race in the lead on the marker posts. After careful consideration Stewards gave Dough Hewitt the benefit of the doubt regarding the drive and noted his comments.
