Adjourned from Redcliffe Race 2, March 7 2024

Stewards Panel

S Shinn (Chair), R Ride

Stewards today concluded an inquiry adjourned from Redcliffe Race 2, March 7, 2024. On that day evidence was taken from Lola Weidemann, driver of Junior Ryan, regarding the manner in which the gelding was driven out over the concluding stages. After viewing the official race videos from each available angle, most helpfully the head on in the run to the finish, Stewards were able to ascertain that throughout the run to the finish Ms Weidemann had, with minimum required pauses, urged Junior Ryan using her left hand rein for the majority of the home straight. During the adjournment Stewards obtained an Intelligence Report into the betting activity on the race which concluded that ‘based on the data sets examined it is doubtful that a correlation between Lola Weidemann’s drive and wagering endured’.

Today Ms Weidemann added that in the race in question Junior Ryan was required to make two moves in the race which may not have suited the lightly raced gelding as in comparison to its winning performance the gelding was held to only one run over the latter stages of that race. She added that although she didn’t resort to using her whip in the run to the finish, she is confident that driving the gelding out in the manner she did produced the optimum effort of Junior Ryan under the circumstances.

Having considered the evidence in totality, Stewards were comfortable that Ms Weidemann had driven out Junior Ryan within the rules, albeit without resorting to using the whip for encouragement. This finding not withstanding, Stewards advised Ms Weidemann that they expect Junior Ryan to be driven out in a similar manner under similar circumstances.
