Will building on his 600 wins

WHEN you have more than 600 wins on your resume at the ripe old age of 23, it’s no wonder Will Rixon finds himself in demand.

Rixon heads for Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night with seven chances on the eight race card.

Still first ‘dibs’ usually goes to his father Peter, one of Menangle’s form trainers of recent weeks – even though he is on the sidelines.

Peter is out of action following shoulder surgery but has found a willing team of deputies in his wife Cindy as well as his twins Will and Hannah Rixon to share the workload.

“Dad might be laid up but he’s still giving orders and should be back in no time,” said Will who drives three of the Rixon stable representatives on Saturday night while his sister Hannah will handle Jilliby Nitro in race 2.

“Dad tore two tendons off the bone and that was pretty painful but he’s doing OK,” said Will.

“Amanda Turnbull drove a couple of perfect races to win a double for the stable last weekend and we were all pretty stoked how they went.”

Will partners former Queensland pacer Ooga Chaka for the David Aiken stable in Race 4 and intimated it was probably his best chance.

The five-year-old gelding had his first start for the stable last week and held off a strong field to score in a slick 1:52.4 mile.

“I was really impressed with this bloke’s last effort and I’m looking forward to driving him again,” said Rixon.

“He’s a beautiful type and he’s in the right hands with David Aiken and looks a really good chance.”

The Rixon twins will battle each other in Race 2 when Will drives the well-drawn Dance And Deliver, chasing his third win from his past four starts.

“We’re really happy with him although he goes up a grade which should be a bit of a test for him,” he said.

“Horses like Jilly Nitro are probably back a grade so it will be interesting to see where he’s at.

“But I do think he’ll be thereabouts.

“Mum and Dad have Jilliby Nitro going extra well and he’s in a great vein of form and he should run well again.”

Rixon has also been impressed with Super Service (Race 8).

“He’s a lovely horse and he probably exceeded our expectations when he won first-up here.

“He tried really hard down the straight.”
