Thorn Senses a Blueblood

THE latest member of harness racing's hottest equine family has a name.
The soon-to-be yearling half-sister to newly crowned Inter Dominion champion Leap To Fame and NZ Cup hero Swayzee was this week officially named Senses.

The daughter of Lettucereason is by American Ideal, while Leap To Fame's sire is Bettors Delight, and Swayzee is by Rock n Roll Heaven.

Senses is just the fifth foal out of Lettucereason, who enjoyed a terrific racing career with 51 starts, netting 17 wins, 17 seconds, five-thirds and $180,073.

The daughter of Art Major ran third in the Bathurst Gold Tiara and NSW Breeders Challenge final as a two-year-old and returned at three to finish fifth in the NSW Oaks final, fourth in the APG final and third in the Breeders Challenge final.

Add to that the fact that Lettucereason is a sister, former millionaire pacer, and now stallion, For A Reason.

Lettucereason's first foal, Maximus Red (by American Ideal), won 30 races, was placed another 59 times and banked $333,027.

Then came rising six-year-old Swayzee, who has raced 49 times for 19 wins, 10 placings and earnings of $899,314.

Leap To Fame's Ladbrokes Inter Dominion win took his record to a remarkable 39 starts for 29 wins, eight placings and $1,797,382.

Senses will be trained by David Thorn, who inspected the filly with client and friend Mitch Lenaghan a few weeks ago.

"Mitch wanted to buy a nice mare to breed from, but they can be expensive, so we settled on this filly," Thorn said.

"Mitch and a friend bought her mainly from a breeding point of view but also in the hope she might make a nice racehorse, too."

"She was entered for the Nutrien sale in Melbourne, but we did a private deal a few weeks ago ahead of the sale."

Lenaghan owns Thorn's stable star, Our Money Rocks, who competed well through the recent Brisbane Inter Dominion, ironically chasing home Leap To Fame with 10th in the pacing final.

"We were thrilled with his series. He's out for a good spell now with a long-term view to next year's Inter Dominion because he's here in Sydney," Thorn said.
