Trainers with multiple runners in any one race were questioned in relation to their intended tactics.
RACE 1 – GARRARDS AT GLOUCESTER PARK PACE (2130MS).
SHOOT THROUGH NZ (C Voak)- Commenced to give ground from the 1200m and collapsed and fell in the front straight to receive the bell. The emergency warning system was subsequently activated as the field entered the back straight on the final occasion with all drivers retiring their runners from the race. Stewards subsequently declared the event to be a no-race. SHOOT THROUGH NZ was found to be deceased due to a suspected heart attack. Trainer D Padberg stated that the gelding had been working strongly and racing well in recent weeks and had not experienced any veterinary issues. Ms Padberg undertook to provide Stewards with the treatment records pertaining to the gelding. A post- mortem sample was taken for analysis. The incident will be referred to the RWWA Veterinary Department for subsequent review in accordance with the RWWA Stewards’ Policy.
RACE 2 – GARRARDS - YOUR ONE STOP SHOP 3YO PACE (2130MS):
OFF THE CHARTS (C Lewis)-Shifted up the track slightly in the front straight on the final occasion.
DARK EYES (S Suvaljko)-Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages when endeavouring to improve into marginal running.
RACE 3 – GARRARDS – SERVICE WITH INTEGRITY PACE (2130MS) :
RUPERT OF LINCOLN (S Suvaljko)- Driver S Suvaljko reported the gelding was windsucking throughout.
DOC HOLLIDAY NZ (R Warwick)-Gave ground from the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
RACE 4 – GARRARDS ONLINE PACE (2130MS):
THE MIKI TAKER (A De Campo)- Driver A De Campo was fined $300 under HR156(2(a) for using his whip in more than a flicking motion.
REGAL CHEVAL (M Brown)- When questioned in relation to her driving tactics in the early stages, Driver Ms M Brown stated that she expected THE MIKI TAKER (A De Campo) to race in a one wide position which would have allowed her to improve to the inside of that gelding and take up a more favourable position, however THE MIKI TAKER remained racing on the peg line and she was therefore obliged to race further back in the field than desired.
RACE 5 – WWW.HORSEANDHOUND.COM.AU PACE (2130MS):
No racing incidents to report.
RACE 6 – GARRARDS HORSE & HOUND EASTER CUP (G3) PACE (2503SS):
FRANCO MECCA NZ (C Voak)- Galloped out. Will now be placed out of the draw for future standing start events.
SKIPPYS DELIGHT NZ (A De Campo)- Galloped out. Will now be placed out of the draw for future standing start events.
BRICKIES DREAM NZ (R Williams) – Galloped out. A warning was issued against the gelding’s starting manner.
ARDENS HORIZON NZ (C Suvaljko) - Galloped out. A warning was issued against the gelding’s starting manner.
RACE 7 – GARRARDS HORSE & HOUND AUSTRALIA & NZ WIDE MS PACE (2130MS):
ROCKNROLL SASS (C Peterson)-Driver C Peterson was questioned in relation to his tactics through the early stages where he challenged FLEUR DU MAQUIS (K Harper) for the lead with a faster than average lead time of 36 seconds recorded and the mare giving ground from the 400m and finishing last. Mr Peterson explained that he was instructed by Trainer N Turvey to attempt to lead, and he therefore challenged and attempted to cross FLEUR DU MAQUIS, however when he could not develop sufficient advantage over that mare he desisted and commenced to restrain ROCKNROLL SASS prior to entering the front straight on the first occasion before then taking a position on the peg line. Mr Peterson further stated that the mare’s most recent starts were over lesser distances where it was able to race prominently at Pinjarra on 11 March 2024 and Gloucester Park on 22 March 2024 and finish off the race, however the circumstances of tonight’s event had ultimately not suited the mare in having to work very hard in attempting to cross to the lead. He added that where it is assessed in future races that the mare may have to be driven vigorously from the start and oblige it to work hard in an endeavour to lead, alternative tactics will be adopted where the mare will be driven patiently through the early stages. Stewards were of the opinion that Mr Peterson’s tactics were not unreasonable after considering all the circumstances, and no further action was taken. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities.
TURN THE PAGE NZ (D Roberts)-Driver D Roberts was interviewed in relation to allowing the gelding to improve forward after initially having cover when in a trailing position and race outside the leader in the back straight on the second occasion. Ms Roberts explained that as the first quarter was run in 32.3, she believed her best option was to allow the mare to stride forward to race outside the leader as it had performed well when driven in a similar manner in the past.
RACE 8 – GARRARDS FREE CALL 1800 060 896 PACE (1730MS):
ROCKIN RUFUS (C Voak)- Hung inwards under pressure at the turn into the front straight on the final occasion with driver having some difficulty in shifting the gelding outwards away from another runner to afford it sufficient room. Mr Voak advised he had recommended a gear change to Trainer G Inwood to rectify its racing manner.
RACE 9 – CALL GARRARDS HORSE AND HOUND FOR ALL YOUR EQUINE NEEDS PACE (2130MS):
No racing incidents to report.
RACE 10- GARRARDS HORSE AND HOUND PACE (2130MS):
HE’S NEVER BEEN BETA NZ (G Hall Jnr)- Contacted a marker peg approaching the end of the back straight on the first occasion and was then restrained and taken outwards to improve forward to take the lead.
General: Driver C Voak (DUTY BOUND NZ) was shown the vision of the early stages where he crossed to the lead and was reminded of his obligation to ensure he is fully clear of other runners prior to crossing in future.
