General:

Consideration was given to a protest lodged by driver C. Johnson on behalf of the connections of CELESTIAL DAYBREAK alleging interference over the final 100 meters against the 1st placegetter SUMMERDAYS. After considering all the available evidence it was established that rounding the home turn SUMMERDAYS commence to shift wider on the track and as a result CELESTIAL DAYBREAK was taken wider on the track until near the 40 metres at which point SUMMERDAYS was corrected by its driver. As Stewards were comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred that CELESTIAL DAYBREAK would have beaten home SUMMERDAYS and therefore the objection was upheld and all-clear given on the numbers of 8-1-6-3

D. Smith’s licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of 7 days to commence at midnight 24th March 2024. R. Slater stated that he drove the gelding positively as it had won recently when driven in a similar manner and that he was of the opinion that once obtaining the position outside the lead near the 1850 metres his runner was travelling well within itself and therefore was satisfied to maintain the position outside the lead. R. Slater added that approaching the 1400 metres he observed MY LINE OF FIRE improving three wide at which point he elected maintain the position outside the lead due to MY LINE OF FIRE being driven hard to improve its position and furthermore he was still holding his position comfortably at that stage of the event. R. Slater further said that approaching the 900 metres MY LINE OF FIRE improved to his outside however he was reluctant to surrender that position due to the distance left in the event and furthermore the amount of work MY LINE OF FIRE had done. R. Slater added that his runner was under pressure from the 600 metres and he was disappointed with the overall performance in tonight’s event. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards after considering all the evidence advised Driver R. Slater in that in their opinion he erred in his tactics by maintaining his position outside the lead when there was an opportuning to take cover from MY LINE OF FIRE and give his horse some respite.
