Trainers with multiple horses engaged in any given race were questioned as to the intended driving tactics to be adopted

RACE 1 – SULKY.APP - THE FUTURE OF FORM PACE (2150 MS)

CARRAMAR HAZEL – held up and no clear run rounding home turn final occasion; utilized sprint lane thereafter.

ROLLING BONUS – held up and no clear run rounding home turn final occasion.

SURFIN AT MIDNIGHT - held up and no clear run rounding home turn final occasion.

ADMIRALOFTHEFLEET – Driver Brian Gath was questioned regarding the tactics adopted after he remained three wide throughout before giving ground over the later stages to be beaten 46m in 7th place. Mr Gath explained that after being caught wide early he elected to work forward and attempt to cross Ace Duigan to the position outside the leader however driver Ashley Manton maintained the position. Mr Gath stated that at approximately the 1400m he looked to restrain into a gap which had appeared behind Ace Duigan however it was not sufficient for him to cross into. Mr Gath was then of the opinion that Admiralofthefleet would be further disadvantaged if he restrained to the rear because the gelding is one paced and would be unable to improve again when the pace increased over the latter stages. Mr Gath then rated the gelding without placing further pressure on the leaders.

A Post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Considering the explanation and the performance of the gelding after being caught wide, stewards noted his explanation.

HURRIKANE DUSTY – tired to be beaten 51.4m into tenth placing; warning issued.

ACE DUIGAN – pre veterinary examinations in accordance with the HRV Animal Welfare policy having attained 12 or more years of age. No obvious abnormalities detected and the gelding was cleared to start. Driver Ashley Manton was queried as to why he elected not to take cover from Admiralofthefleet which was improving three wide during the early stages. Ace Duigan gave ground over the latter stages to be beaten 53m. Mr Manton explained that Ace Duigan has won almost all of its previous races from the lead or outside the leader and is best suited to racing in a forward position. Mr Manton added that the gelding has become more one paced with age and he was reluctant to give away the advantage of racing on the pace. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Given the recent exposed form of the gelding, having won from a forward position over the same distance and the explanation of Mr Manton, his comments were noted however Mr Maton was advised that if Ace Duigan performed similarly when driven in this manner that his tactics would need to be reconsidered.
