Supplementary report - Race 7 Albion Park 3 June 2022.

Stewards today reconvened an inquiry into the driving tactics adopted by driver Matt Elkins (Sharp Shooter) from race 7 at the Albion Park on Friday, 3 June 2022. Mr Elkins stated that his intention was to lead in the event and his assessment was that Sharp Shooter had the necessary speed to cross the field and thereby gain the advantage on a Rainbow Dance by the first turn. Mr Elkins stated that Sharp Shooter had gained an advantage on Rainbow Dance before the first turn and considered that driver Peter McMullen had not committed fully to holding the lead which resulted in him continuing to pressure for the lead on the first turn.

Mr Elkins stated that Sharp Shooter is best suited when leading but not suited when racing outside the leader as has been shown in previous starts.

Stewards reviewed previous performances of Sharp Shooter and perused wagering information which did not support any betting abnormalities relative to this race.

After deliberation, Stewards were not satisfied to the requisite standard that a breach of AHR rule 149 (2) - unacceptable drive, had been reached and Mr Elkins was given the benefit of a doubt and advised not to leave his drives open to question in future.

General

Stewards inquired into the reason why the sulky of Which Hunt (Shane Graham) contacted marker pegs racing into the first turn, It was established after taking evidence from driver Will Rixon (La Safron) and Shane Graham that both horses after restraining at the start, simultaneously angled down the track for the one position on the marker line to trail Cover Girl NZ .  Which Hunt with momentum  had progressed briefly to the inside of the sulky of La Safron and as a consequence contacted marker pegs and was eased out of that position. Stewards were of the view that no one drivers was fully at fault and therefore took no further action only to note this as a racing incident.
