Trainers with multiple runners in any one race provided stewards with their intentions prior to the event.
RACE 1 AUTOPRO PACE – 1609MS
FOOTLOCK – Gave ground over the final 400 metres of the event to eventually be beaten 36.0 metres, a post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities, a warning was issued.
GLACIER HEIGHTS – Driver M. Dennis reported to Stewards that his tyre deflated shortly after the start was effected, consequently he retired from the event. Inspection of the equipment found it to be of good quality.
TRIGGER – Hung in over the final 400 metres of the event, a warning was issued.
FUMIA REACTOR – Driver M. Smith advised Stewards that the bit had pulled through the mouth of his runner and he had difficulty steering FUMIA REACTOR.
RACE 2 LH PERRY & SONS SPRINT – 1100MS
CHILDERS ROAD – Showed gate speed but was unable to hold the lead when challenged by CELESTIAL DAYBREAK. Stewards questioned driver M. Smith regarding the tactics he adopted but also how he may drive CHILDERS ROAD in the second sprint due to the distance he was beaten, which was 24.0 meters. M.Smith advised Stewards that it was always his intention to try and hold the lead as he believed it was his best opportunity to win the event and then when he didn’t have sufficient speed to hold CELESTIAL DAYBREAK he elected to make CELESTIAL DAYBREAK do some extra work to find the front as just allowing him to cross would possibly result in CELESTIAL DAYBREAK being far too good and not being able to run it down, as he had driven CELESTIAL DAYBREAK previously and all its best performances were when leading. M. Smith went on to say that in the second heat he would obviously not ask as much of CHILDERS ROAD over the first 300 metres but it was difficult to have set plans as the start would be all important. Stewards noted his explanation and intentions.
WITH AUTHORITY – Gave ground over the final 300 metres of the event to eventually be beaten 60.0 metres, a post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities, a warning was issued.
CELESTIAL DAYBREAK – Showed gate speed and was able to assume the lead after challenging for 300 metres, Stewards questioned driver K. Hryhorec regarding the tactics she adopted, in particular her decision to continue to allow CELESTIAL DAYBREAK to run quick sectionals, after working so hard to find the lead, and was then run down in the final straight by ILLAWONG KIM. K. Hryhorec stated that she would normally have tried to reduce the tempo, when working so hard for the lead, however, trainer S. Loone had discussed tactics with her and it was his request that if she found the front that she allow CELESTIAL DAYBREAK to continue to run, as he was of the opinion, she was by far the best horse in the race and he did not feel any other runners would be able to chase her down. Stewards accepted he explanation but did point out that a slight reduction in tempo and run the third quarter around a second slower, is still a solid time and meets the expectation of the trainer but also may have allowed CELESTIAL DAYBREAK to respond when challenged in the final straight. K. Hryhorec acknowledged the Stewards suggestion and said she would see how the second heat unfolded.
RACE 3 BRIAN MONTGOMERIE MEMORIAL – 1609MS
WEEROONA BOY – Utilised the sprint lane when it became available and was fully tested in the final straight.
RACE 4 SPENCER MOTOR COMPANY PACE – 1609MS
DIDMESELFAMISCHIEF – Withstood a challenge for the lead from INDYANNA, led the event but struggled to finish off the race due to the quick tempo of the early part of the race.
ULTIMATE TROUBLE – Gave ground over the final 250 metres of the event to eventually be beaten 42.0 metres, a post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities, driver D. Afford believed the fast 27.8 first quarter didn’t suit ULTIMATE TROUBLE but it was still a little disappointing in his view, a warning was issued
INDYANNA – Unsuccessfully challenged for the lead, raced outside the leader for the remainder of the event.
CUTE ROCK – Inconvenienced near the 450 metres when DIDMESELFAMISCHIEF commenced to give ground in advance of her.
RACE 5 ELDERS INSURANCE PACE – 1609MS
MISS IZZIE – Gave ground over the final 500 metres of the event to eventually be beaten 183.0 metres, a post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. MISS IZZIE was stood down until the completion of one satisfactory re-qualifying trial.
ROLL WITH MUSTARD – Raced fiercely in the score up then showed gate speed and was able to drive through and hold the lead. Stewards questioned driver L. Harvey regarding the tactics she adopted, in particular her decision to drive hard to hold the lead, when there was an opportunity to take a trail on the back of the more fancied IRUNFORMUM, which then resulted in ROLL WITH MUSTARD tiring and being beaten 74.0 metres. L. Holman stated that when leading in trials and trackwork ROLL WITH MUSTARD is almost impossible to get past, irrespective of the quality of horse challenging the gelding, so she believed the best chance for ROLL WITH MUSTARD to win the race, was to hold the lead and then try to get away with a leisurely middle section of the race, which she was able to do so, but the gelding was disappointing over the final 400 metres. L. Holman also believed the heavy track may have played some part in the below expectation performance of ROLL WITH MUSTARD. L. Holman advised Stewards that she would monitor the recovery of ROLL WITH MUSTARD and if anything was to come to light which may have impacted the performance of the gelding she would notify the Stewards, her explanation was noted.
RACE 6 ALEX’S MEAT SPRINT (ROUND 2) – 1100MS
All horses in the event had undergone a post-race veterinary examination to ensure they had recovered appropriately from the first heat (Race 2). All horses were passed fit to compete.
RACE 7 MIDSTATE HARDWARE PACE – 1609MS
RILEY JAY – Showed gate speed and led the event, however, driver D. Afford elected to take a trail on the back of LITTLE BAY ENGINE near the 1400 metres.
