MY BELLE AND ME– Sulky contacted by the trailing WAR WESTERN near the 200 metres.
WAR WESTERN– Caught wide in the early stages before being restrained to the rear of the field near the 1800 metres. Hung in and over raced throughout the event. Near the 200 metres, hung in, contacted marker pegs and paced roughly when improving and contacting the sulky of MY BELLE AND ME. Jake Bates, the driver of WAR WESTERN explained that his gelding was on one rein throughout and connections would look to make gear adjustments to assist with the gelding’s tractability. A warning was issued against the gelding for its tractability. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
CANONLYBEONESIR– Caught wide in the early stages before working forward to the position outside the leader passing the 1800 metres. Gave ground over the final stages to finish in 8th position, beaten 35 metres.
LADY DELIGHT – Post-race swab sample.
RACE 2 – SKY RACING ACTIVE PACE – 1720 metres
BETTA SHINE– Driver David Morris was issued a reprimand under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference in that approaching the 400 metres, he permitted his filly to shift wider, raced inside the line and struck the near hind leg of ENDLESS DRAMA.
CHEETAH LODGE– Worked forward to obtain the lead passing the 1350 metres. Post-race swab sample.
HIGHLY RESPECTED– Pre-race blood sample. Approaching the 400 metres, struck the sulky of ENDLESS DRAMA which was taken wider by BETTA SHINE.
ENDLESS DRAMA– (Barrier 7) raced ungenerously after the start. Approaching the 400 metres was hampered by BETTA SHINE which shifted wider resulting in the trailing HIGHLY RESPECTED improving onto its back, contacting its offside tyre causing it to flatten.
RACE 3 – BELL & ERNIES BIG SISTER PACE – 2125 metres
TEAM OF STARZZZ – Examined by the clubs veterinarian prior to and following the event as a result of the gelding racing in excess of 200 race starts.
SHADOW ECLIPSE– Pre-race blood sample. Pulled hard throughout the event. Post-race swab sample.
THE DAMAGE DONE– Caught wide in the early stages until working forward to the position outside the leader passing the 1600 metres. Weakened over the final 600 metres to finish in 9th position beaten 68 metres. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Driver Robert Morris explained that connections were expecting a forward showing and after being caught wide and unable to obtain a position with cover he elected to improve forward. Mr Morris added that his gelding didn’t appear to handle the tight track, struck its knee on the turns and would appreciate a larger track. THE DAMAGE DONE was placed in its last chance to race truly.
MANLY MACH– (Barrier 7) broke gait during the score up for which a warning was issued.
CLASSIC GRANGE– Paced roughly between the 1400 and 1200 metres. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
RACE 4 – ALLAN DOROTHY MULLINS PACE – 1720 metres
STARZZZ REIGN– Weakened from the 600 metres to finish in 9th position beaten 155.3 metres. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer/Driver Blake Fitzpatrick explained that he intended to be positive from the inside barrier and although being challenged in the early stages by BLUE SUEDE ROCKA, he didn’t consider that runner suitable to trail and maintained his position. Mr Fitzpatrick added that although recording the first quarter in 27.8 seconds, STARZZZ REIGN failed to travel well from the 800 metres and proved disappointing. In view of the performance Stewards ordered that STARZZZ REIGN be stood down until it competes one requalifying trial. Stewards will further follow up with Mr Fitzpatrick as to the gelding’s post-race recovery.
BLUE SUEDE ROCKA– Unsuccessfully challenged for the lead in the early stages and over the final stages failed to run on from the 400 metres to finish in 7th position beaten 46.8 metres. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Driver Jake Bigeni explained that after beginning well, he gained a significant advantage over STARZZZ REIGN and as that runner kicked up to his inside he continued forward until nearing the 1400 metres at which time he eased. Mr Bigeni stated that after the early challenge, his gelding raced keenly but did settle in the run and was found wanting over the final 400 metres which in his opinion was contributed by the early use of his gelding. On review Stewards noted his comments when it was determined that the challenge for the lead was not unreasonable in all of the circumstances. Notwithstanding the Stewards findings, Mr Bigeni was advised that he must be more alert to the pace in the event to ensure he provides his horse with all reasonable opportunity to finish off the event.
JAY BRACKEN– Post-race swab sample.
POLKA DELIGHT NZ– Caught wide in the early stages until being restrained to the rear of the field at the 1350 metres.

Improved there wide from the 1850 metres until working forward to the position outside the leader at the 1700 metres. Weakened over the final 900 metres to finish in 7th position beaten 118.5 metres. Driver Jack Brown explained that following the early error and driving aggressively to catch the field, his gelding struck its sulky wheels, over raced and when improving onto the back of AMERICAN MADE NZ which was easing, he elected to improve and then settled once gaining the position outside the leader. Mr Brown added that his gelding failed to run on from the 600 metres and considers the early error and additional work to improve was the main contributor as to the overall performance. A post-race veterinarian examination revealed the gelding to be lame in its L/H and will be stood down for a period of 7 days (NTC) and until a certificate of fitness is submitted. Trainer’s representative Mr Jack Callaghan was reminded of his obligations to ensure that the horse remains on course for at least 30 minutes following the event as required under Rule 43A.
