ARDEN MESSI NZ– Pre race blood sample. Stewards questioned driver Joshua Gallagher with regards to the tactics he adopted in the early and middle stages of the event whereby he elected to surrender the lead in the early stages to COLLINA KAY JAY. Driver Josh Gallagher advised stewards that he was provided instructions by trainer Kevin Pizzuto to drive the gelding with a sit this evening given he was racing back over the shorter mile journey as the horse has a tendency to drop out in its races when leading over the mile at Menangle. Mr Gallagher further advised that he believed that despite ARDEN MESSI NZ being a tough horse it is more suited when racing over the longer journey. Mr Gallagher was further questioned regarding his decision to remain behind the leader when the pace slackened passing the 1100 metres rather than improve his horse forward where it was expected that COLLINA KAY JAY would hand up the running. Mr Gallagher advised stewards that he didn’t consider the option as he was driving to instructions. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Gallagher stewards determined to note his comments.
COLLINA KAY JAY– Pre race blood sample. Worked forward to the lead passing the 1200 metres. Stewards questioned Jack Trainor with regards to the performance of the gelding which finished in 8th placing beaten 28 metres. Mr Trainor advised Stewards that he felt the gelding had raced flat this evening and would likely now be spelled. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed it to be mildly lame in its left hind leg and was stood down until the production of a veterinary certificate of clearance. After considering the explanation of Mr Trainor, in addition to the veterinary findings Stewards determined to take no further action.

Mr Hewitt advised stewards that he had settled in a position five back on the marker pegs however the tempo of the event was extremely slow and he was concerned that when the running line had commenced to form behind him that he would be shuffled back to the rear of the field. Mr Hewitt explained that given the tempo that he may have been able to quickly improve to the lead of the event however Mr Callaghan was able to cover his move and he was left racing outside the lead without cover which is a position the gelding doesn’t race well in. Mr Hewitt further advised stewards that had he had his time over again he would not look to make a similar move.
