RACE 4 – LYN NORMAN MEMORIAL PACE (2185MS)
Stewards inquired into the reasons for WRITE A MELODY (C. Voak) breaking gait and severely checking OURCARIBBEANCRUISE (G. Johnson) when racing into the back straight on the final occasion. Stewards heard evidence from drivers C. Peterson (WHERESTHETOWROPE), C. Voak (WRITE A MELODY). Driver C. Voak put forward he had shifted his drive to the three wide line and after seeing WHERESTHETOWROPE attempting to shift outwards, decided to hold his line and resist the move. Driver C. Peterson commented that he had noticed SWEETEST THING (D. Roberts) in advance of him had sustained a flat sulky wheel tyre and not wanting to be inconvenienced, had attempted to shift outwards and carry out WRITE A MELODY in an attempt for clear running. As he was doing so, MOTOR ON LILLY (K. Harper) was tiring in the moving line which had placed him in an awkward position. As a result, when the outwards move was resisted, WRITE A MELODY broke gait. When considering the incident Stewards were of the opinion that the two drivers were head-to-head when the movement had occurred and the ease outwards by Driver C. Peterson was reasonable and as a result could not contribute the actions of either Driver as being the reason for WRITE A MELODY breaking gait. Stewards reminded all drivers of their obligations when shifting or resisting a movement to always do this safely. No further action was taken.
Stewards inquired into the reasons EXTINCTION (D. Egerton-Green) being held tight and breaking gait racing in the front straight on the first occasion. Stewards heard evidence from Drivers D. Suvaljko (CLASSNSMART) accompanied with the RWWA Driving Coach, and D. Egerton-Green. After viewing the official patrol films, Stewards charged Driver D. Suvaljko under the provisions of R163(1)(a)(i) for causing crossing, in that when he shifted inwards he wasn’t fully clear of EXTINCTION causing that runner to be held tight and broke gait as a result. Driver D. Suvaljko pleaded guilty to the charge and was subsequently suspended from driving for a period of 10 days commencing midnight 5 July 2022. In considering penalty, Stewards took into account Mr Suvaljko’s good driving record, and his concession status.
CLASSNSMART (D. Suvaljko) – Contacted the near-side sulky wheel of SWEETEST THING (D. Roberts) racing in the front straight to receive the bell after the pace had reduced marginally with SWEETEST THING sustaining a flat sulky wheel tyre.
EXTINCTION (D. Egerton-Green) – Contacted several marker pegs racing in the front straight to receive the bell.
MOTOR ON LILLY (K. Harper) – Tired over the concluding stages.
