Trainers with multiple runners in any one race were questioned in relation to their intended tactics.
The sprint lane was in operation at today’s meeting.
RACE 1 – REGENCY FOODS 2YO PACE (1684MS)
IMPERIUM was a late withdrawal by Stewards at 11.55am when the colt underwent a pre-race Veterinary examination on arrival on course and was found to be showing signs of a virus. Trainer Mr D. Schofield was advised the colt will be stood down for a period of 7 days.
HEZ ALL THE RAGE NZ – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination which revealed the colt to have an abrasion to its offside nostril and was passed fit to start.
Trainer A. De Campo fined $50 under R273(6)(b) for FLYING COPPA not wearing gear that had been approved by the Stewards (Spreaders Off).
RACE 2 – CAPTAIN AHAB STANDING AT MURRAY VET CLINIC 3YO FILLIES PREFERRED PACE (2185MS)
CAPITOL DAWN (K. Symington) – Inconvenienced racing into the back straight on the final occasion. Held up for clear running in the home straight.
SHOOT FOR STARDOM (C. Voak) – Tightened for racing room and contacted the sulky of BABYSGOTBLUEEYES (T. Wheeler) and raced roughly for a short distance racing into the back straight on the final occasion. When questioned in relation to him relinquishing the lead racing in the back straight on the first occasion, Driver C. Voak advised that he could observe KNIGHT EAGLE (G. Gray) which was improving quickly to his outside in the moving line was over-racing and rather than drive the filly along to hold the lead which was having its first start today, he elected to allow KNIGHT EAGLE to continue to improve and obtain the lead. He further advised when obtaining clear running in the home straight, the filly had only finished the race off fairly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have returned with an elevated heart rate and to be slow to recover.
General: Drivers T. Wheeler (BABYSGOTBLUEEYES) and C. Voak (SHOOT FOR STARDOM) appeared before Stewards in relation to an incident racing into the back straight on the final occasion where SHOOT FOR STARDOM raced roughly for a short distance. After considering the evidence of the above mentioned drivers and viewing the available patrol films, it was established that racing into the back straight on the final occasion, BABYSGOTBLUEEYES which was racing outside and slightly in advance of SHOOT FOR STARDOM positioned to its inside, had a tendency to want to hang inwards and in doing so tightened the racing room of SHOOT FOR STARDOM for a short distance which contacted the sulky wheel of BABYSGOTBLUEEYES and raced roughly. Stewards were of the opinion that Driver T. Wheeler had not driven in a careless manner taking into consideration his drive had a tendency to want to lay inwards and that BABYSGOTBLUEEYES had only shifted inwards marginally, however, reminded him of his obligations in ensuring he allows sufficient racing room to other runners in similar circumstances in future.
RACE 3 – CAPTAIN AHAB DOUBLE WESTBRED PACE (1684MS)
LAST MINI MINOR (H. Reeves) – Raced roughly for a short distance racing into the front straight to receive the bell. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding which gave ground from the 800m revealed an elevated heart rate. When questioned in relation to his tactics adopted through the early stages where he attempted to withstand the challenge for the lead, running the first quarter of the last mile in 27 second and, further as to why he then elected to shift up the track to a position outside the leader after CARIBBEAN TIMES had crossed to lead racing in the front straight on the first occasion, Mr Reeves advised that after being challenged for the lead for the first 400m of the event, he elected to surrender this position racing in the front straight to receive the bell. He further advised that shortly after CARIBBEAN TIMES has attained the lead, and being mindful of the fast run first quarter, he expected CARIBBEAN TIMES to be eased after working hard and that LAST MINI MINOR has a tendency to over race, therefore he elected to shift into a position outside CARIBBEAN TIMES. Shortly after shifting to a one wide position, he was of the opinion the speed of the race had eased racing in the front straight to receive the bell and as he was mindful CARIBBEAN TIMES had surrendered the lead at its first start, he elected to drive forward, however, in doing so CARIBBEAN TIMES has again increased the speed of the race with him then electing to take hold. Stewards after considering the explanation tendered by Mr Reeves and viewing the lateral patrol vision advised Mr Reeves that taking into consideration the first quarter was run in 27 seconds, it would have been more beneficial for him to hold his position trailing the leader, however, taking into consideration his explanation in that he was expecting the speed of the race to decrease after both runners had worked hard through the early stages and that he may have been left in a vulnerable position when trailing the leader as LAST MINI MINOR can over race and that is the reason he elected to shift to a position in the one wide line, Mr Reeves was strongly advised by Stewards that he is expected to drive in a manner which will afford his drives the opportunity to finish races in the best possible position and that he should not drive in a manner which opens himself up for questioning in future.
CARRIBBEAN TIMES (G. Hall Jnr) – A post-race veterinary examination of the mare which gave ground in the home straight revealed no abnormalities. When questioned in relation to the tactics he adopted through the early stages of the event where he successfully challenged for the lead running the first quarter of the last mile in 27 seconds, Driver G. Hall Jnr advised he was issued with no specific driving instructions and that after the start was effected the mare had showed good gate speed similar to its first start, therefore he elected to drive vigorously and challenge for the lead shortly after the start. He further advised LAST MINI MINOR (H. Reeves) attempted to withstand his challenge and he was initially in the mindset to ease his drive to obtain a trailing position behind that runner, however, in his opinion LAST MINI MINOR commenced to race roughly, therefore he elected to continue to drive forward to lead the event racing in the front straight to receive the bell. Further, he advised as LAST MINI MINOR had improved to his outside, he had elected to ease his drive being mindful of the fast run first quarter in which he was of the opinion LAST MINI MINOR had commenced to make ground on his drive, therefore he elected to increase the speed of his drive to hold the lead which resulted in him running the second quarter quicker then what he had wanted. Stewards taking into consideration the explanation of Mr Hall and viewing the lateral patrol vision were of the opinion his explanation was not unreasonable in the circumstances and took the matter no further.
DELIGHTABLE NZ (D. Miller) – Raced roughly for a short distance after the start.
General: Drivers H. Reeves and G. Hall Jnr appeared before Stewards in relation to CARRIBBEAN TIMES shifting inwards to obtain the lead racing into the front straight on the first occasion. Mr Hall Jnr was cautioned and advised that although he did not make contact when crossing LAST MINI MINOR, Driver Reeves did have to take some action when he elected to cross and was advised in similar circumstances he must allow sufficient room when crossing in future.
RACE 4 – RENAISSANCE MAN BACK IN W.A. FILLIES & MARES PACE (2185MS)
ROCKIN THE TREND was a late withdrawal from this event at 9.09am when Trainer S. Suvaljko advised the mare was off it’s feed. Ms Suvaljko was advised in future she must inspect her horses prior to the 8.30am deadline to avoid further action being taken and ROCKIN THE TREND would be stood down from racing for 28 days unless a Veterinary Certificate of Clearance is produced to reduce this to a 7-day penalty.
ALTA ALLURE (B. Archibald) – Broke gait racing in the front straight on the final occasion. Will be stood down from racing for a period of 6 days and until such time as the completion of 1 satisfactory re-qualifying trial.
RACE 5 – RENAISSANCE MAN VALUE FOR MONEY PACE (2185MS)
ALTA HURRAH NZ (D. Egerton-Green) – Utilised the sprint lane in the home straight to win the race.
LUKE ATTACK (A. De Campo) - Driver A. De Campo reprimanded under R162(1)(j) for failing to maintain his position until the start.
HILARIOUS REIGN (C. Lewis) – In relation to the performance, Driver C. Lewis expressed disappointment and advised when he elected to improve three wide racing in the back straight on the final occasion, the colt failed to quicken as anticipated with a contributing factor being the last half of the last mile being run in a time of 56.7 and that it failed to run on strongly in the home straight.
RACE 6 – DAVID “CAT” MARSHALL PACE (2185MS)
BENJI NZ (K. Symington) - Utilised the sprint lane in the home straight to win the race.
RACE 7 – DRAKESBROOK FINE WINES PACE (2692MS)
No racing incidents to report.

CELEBRITY CHEF (C. Playle) – Raced roughly for a short distance after the start. Placed on its last chance in the standing start draw.
ROMAN REIGN (G. Hall Jnr) – Galloped out as the start was effected. Will continue to be placed outside the draw for future mobile barrier events.
BELLEZZA NERA (D. Egerton-Green) – Driver D. Egerton-Green was cautioned in the manner in which he reduced the speed of his drive racing out of the back straight on the first occasion resulting in TROOPINGOFTHECOLOR (C. Voak) and BREWERY LANE (K. Harper) being inconvenienced.
TROOPINGOFTHECOLOR (C. Voak) – Trainer C. Voak was reprimanded under R273(6)(b) for not wearing gear on TROOPINGOFTHECOLOR that has been approved by Stewards (Murphy Off/Pull Downs On). Inconvenienced when the speed reduced racing out of the back straight on the first occasion.
BREWERY LANE (K. Harper) - Inconvenienced when the speed was reduced racing out of the back straight on the first occasion.
NUCLEAR POKER (N. Johns) – Galloped out as the start was effected. A warning was issued in relation to the geldings standing start manners. Broke gait racing into the front straight to receive the bell and trailed the field thereafter and was retired from the event racing out of the front straight to receive the bell. Will be stood down for a period of 6 days and until such time the gelding completes one satisfactory requalifying trial. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in its off hind. Will require a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to trialling.
RACE 9 – ATRIUM HOTEL TROT (2185MS)
STAY FOCUSED (N. Turvey) – Raced inside the sprint lane marker peg racing in the front straight on the final occasion. As this did not affect the geldings finishing position of 3rd placing, Stewards were not required to hold up the All Clear for the race. Driver N. Turvey was reprimanded under R163(1)(c)(i) for entering the sprint lane prior to the sprint lane marker peg.
WESTLAND PEAK NZ (F. Bennett) – Paced and broke during the score up and was out of position as the start was effected. Will continue to be placed outside the draw for future mobile barrier events.
