Trainers with multiple horses engaged in any given race were questioned as to the intended driving tactics to be adopted.
RACE 1 – EUSTON CLUB PACE (1790 MS)
Only In Rome NZ which has competed in more than 200 races was examined by the veterinarian before the race in accordance with HRV policy which revealed no apparent abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of Only In Rome NZ revealed some slight marking to the offside neck region of the gelding due to the use of a rein burr, which required some minor medical attention from the officiating veterinarian.
A false start was declared at the first attempt due to Two Jacs (J Kerridge) scoring up in the incorrect barrier position when drawn barrier three (3) on the second row resulting in Only In Rome NZ (barrier 4 second row) and The Trainman (barrier 5 second row) being hampered during the score up. Jacob Kerridge, driver of Two Jacs was subsequently fined $100 under rule 162(1)(e) for coming to the barrier out of position. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account that a false start was required to be called, Mr Kerridge’s good prior record and immediate admission.
Jacob Kerridge, driver of Two Jacs explained that he elected to progress forward three wide during the middle stages due to the tempo of the race backing off and that he considered Rocking Wroxton, which was positioned outside of the leader was racing some distance back off the leader. Mr Kerridge added that when Ryan Sanderson, driver of Rocking Wroxton indicated his intention to maintain the position outside of the leader, he then restrained Two Jacs to a rearward position as opposed to remaining three wide over the latter stages. Mr Kerridge’s explanation was noted.
Aaron Coad, driver of Only In Rome NZ was cautioned for allowing his left foot to come away from the sulky footrest approaching the 400m when activating removable gear by hand.
Samantha Pascoe, driver of Takidah (2nd place) was cautioned for allowing the mare to shift out after leading into the home straight.
Tell Us We Dream (3rd place) was held up rounding the final turn prior to obtaining a late clear run to the inside of the leader Takidah.
RACE 2 – THE GATEWAY PACE (2190 MS)
No Emotion galloped during the score up, was out of position at the start and will be placed outside the draw in future mobile start events.
Jordan Leedham, driver of Apache Wind was cautioned for the manner in which he shifted into a three wide position approaching the 800m which caused some inconvenience to Mustang Max.
Somedeal Safari pulled hard when positioned outside the leader during the early and middle stages, resulting in Its Nicholas taken some distance to improve past that runner. Somedeal Safari shifted out slightly near the 500m, which in turn caused Beaudacious and Apache Wind to be inconvenienced.
Lets Go Exclusive (4th place) was held up for a clear run inside the 100m.
Its Nicholas was obliged to race three wide during the early and middle stages before establishing the position outside of the leader. Its Nicholas then tired over the concluding stages to finish at the rear of the field beaten approximately 72m. A veterinary examination of Its Nicholas revealed no apparent abnormalities. A warning was issued against the performance of that gelding.
RACE 3 – TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY PACE (2190 MS)
A pre-race veterinary examination of Classic Reactor revealed some superficial abrasions to the right hind leg of the gelding, however Classic Reactor was cleared to start.
Jimmy Reactor over-raced during the early and middle stages when positioned outside of the leader. Jimmy Reactor was placed under pressure approaching the winning post with one lap remaining and then commenced to yield ground resulting in Classic Reactor and Juslikeroyalty being inconvenienced when following. Jimmy Reactor was then retired from the event in the back straight on the final occasion. Samantha Pascoe, driver of Jimmy Reactor explained that the gelding over-raced to the extent that the gelding had choked down. A veterinary examination of Jimmy Reactor revealed no apparent abnormal findings. Jimmy Reactor was stood down from racing until having trialled satisfactorily on one occasion.
Lorne Beach hung in and contacted a marker peg at the entrance to the home straight.
Fly Like An Angel was caught three wide and then restrained to the rear during the early stages. Fly Like An Angel then improved into the race three wide during the middle stages before tiring over the concluding stages to finish in 8th position beaten approximately 78m. In view of the circumstances, a warning was placed against the performance of that gelding.
RACE 4 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROCKY BUTTERWORTH 3YO PACE (1790 MS)
Boris Devcic, driver of Shallow Pockets was found guilty of a charge under rule 165(1)(b), the particulars of the charge being that passing the winning post on the first occasion, Mr Devcic failed to make sufficient to prevent that gelding from shifting in from a three wide position when not the required clearance of Hungry Hogarth (J Kerridge) causing that gelding to be tightened for room, checked and galloping a short distance after. As a consequence of Hungry Hogarth galloping the following horses were checked to varying degrees, Whodat Boodat, Im Stuck Man, Holzhauer, Didmeselfamischief and Billy Jack. Whodat Boodat and Didmeselfamischeif galloped as a result with the latter runner trailing the field thereafter. Mr Devcic’s licence to drive in races was suspended for 3 weeks to commence midnight 29 July 2022. In assessing penalty in accordance with the HRV Minimum Penalty Guidelines, Stewards took into account Mr Devcic’s relatively good record under the appliable rule (last offence October 2020), his driving frequency and the incident itself in that although contact was not established, the consequential affects resulted in several horses being interfered with.
Boris Devcic, driver of Shallow Pockets was cautioned for tightening the ground of Whodat Boodat approaching the 400m.
Hungry Hogarth galloped clear of interference near 1400m and 1000m and trailed the field thereafter. Hungry Hogarth was stood down from racing until having trialled satisfactorily on one occasion. Holzhaeur was again checked near the 1400m to avoid the galloping Hungry Hogarth.
Samantha Pascoe, driver of Rockets Mate was questioned regarding her tactics over the latter stages and particularly her decision to improve wider from a position behind the leader (Tick Tock Go NZ) approaching the 800m and further applying pressure down the back straight on the final occasion prior to finishing in 2nd place beaten 3.5m. Ms Pascoe explained that particularly due to the moderate tempo during the 2nd quarter (32.8 seconds) and that Rockets Mate had performed competitively when positioned outside of the leader at its most recent start (Mildura 22/7/22), she elected to progress wider as opposed to potentially being pocketed on a track with no sprint lane. Ms Pascoe added that she felt Tick Tock Go NZ was under some driving approaching the back straight on the final occasion and she therefore attempted to improve quickly in an attempt to cross that runner down the back straight. Ms Pascoe further explained that when this failed to eventuate she remained in a position to the outside of the leader (Tick Tock Go NZ) on Rockets Mate. Ms Pascoe conceded in hindsight that the preferable option would have been to remain behind that runner and then potentially improve wider later into the race. Stewards considered that Ms Pascoe’s drive had lack judgement through this section and she was therefore cautioned accordingly.
RACE 5 - TENDERPRINT AUSTRALIA PACE (1790 MS)
The all clear was delayed to enable Stewards and connections of 2nd placed Shady Azz to view the footage of the back and home straight on the final occasion. After doing so, Stewards and connections were satisfied that these incidents had not affected the outcome of the race and therefore all clear was declared on the Judge’s placings. It was established that at the entrance to the back straight on the final occasion, Polly Put Kettleon shifted out slightly whilst leading causing Shady Azz to be inconvenienced. In the home straight, Polly Put Kettleon shifted out under driving, however Shady Azz had not been impeded in the run to the finish. At a subsequent inquiry, Wayne Hill, driver of Polly Put Kettleon was fined $100 under rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving in allowing that mare to shift out considerably under driving in the home straight.

Moreau Drive hung in during the score up, was out of position at the candy pole and a warning was issued against the barrier manners of the mare.
Andrew Vozlic, driver of Moreau Drive was cautioned for momentarily tightening the ground of Nationaldraft shortly after the start.
Moreau Drive tired over the concluding stages resulting in Starvin Marvin NZ being inconvenienced near the 600m. A veterinary examination of Moreau Drive revealed no apparent abnormalities. Given the prior record of Moreau Drive, that mare was stood down from racing until having trialled satisfactorily on one occasion.
RACE 7 – TANKARD DENTAL PACE (1790 MS)
Ayejayem was a late scratching on veterinary advice at 1:50pm after the gelding had got down in the float on route to the course, resulting in the gelding having sustained superficial lacerations. Ayejayem was stood down from racing for 6 days on veterinary advice.
Union King was fractious prior to the start and a warning was issued against the barrier manners of that gelding.
Near the 700m, Ozzie Daybreak momentarily locked sulky wheels with Dougs Cino when progressing three wide, resulting in Union King being inconvenienced.

In not taking further action, Stewards acknowledged that Dontshowyouraces being inclined to hang in over the final stages had contributed to the incident.
Mini Major and Tactfilly Magic had difficulty in obtaining a clear run in the home straight.
Red Terror NZ (1st place) was held up in the early stages of the home straight.
