SUNSHINE RAY – Stewards questioned driver K. Lobb and M. Norman regarding an incident which appeared to occur near the 500 metres which resulted in SUNSHINE RAY being contacted and breaking gait. After taking evidence from both drivers and based on the video replays and their own observations, Stewards charged M. Norman under Rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving, the particulars of the charge were that as the field raced down the back straight on the last occasion, as TEDDY SANDEL shifted wider on the track, he has made contact with the legs of SUNSHINE RAY, causing that runner to break gait. Just as the contact occurred M. Norman had applied pressure to TEDDY SANDEL which resulted in that runner shifting wider than M. Norman had intended however the Stewards were of the opinion that more care should have been taken under the circumstance and hence the charge of careless driving was issued. M. Normans licence was suspended for a period of 7 days, when considering penalty Stewards considered his impeccable driving record and guilty plea.

WHITE STAR MOLLY – Stewards questioned driver S. Grace regarding the tactics he adopted, in particular his decision to continue to drive hard to hold the lead over the first 300 metres, which eventually resulted in WHITE STAR MOLLY giving ground and being beaten 77.0 metres. S. Grace stated that he believed WHITE STAR MOLLY had performed at its best when allowed to run its own race and felt if he could hold the lead the mare would run a competitive race. S. Grace went on to say that he was disappointed with her performance and had decided to retire WHITE STAR MOLLY as its recent performances had been below par. Stewards accepted his explanation, however, agreed the recent performances of the mare were at best average, and hence why he probably should have driven more conservatively. Even though it was the trainer’s intention to retire the mare, Stewards still elected to place WHITE STAR MOLLY on its last chance to race competitively.
BETTOR YOU BET – Inconvenienced as the field raced down the back straight on the final occasion, by the tiring WHITE STAR MOLLY.

Loone was disappointed with the mare’s performance but believed the track conditions may have played some part in her performance, but also admitted that it may have been more advantageous to not go forward at the start, however, prior to the race he didn’t believe there was a lot of speed to the inside of ILLAWONG KIM and that being in front may have been the best place to be under the circumstances. Stewards noted his explanation, however placed ILLAWONG KIM on its last chance to race competitively.
