RACE 1 – TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY PACE – 1800MS

MARIAHS SHADOW– driver Stephen Grace was queried regarding the tactics he adopted in the event. S. Grace stated it was his intention to go forward early as he believed the horse races best when driven forward. After racing 3 wide for the first 500m he attempted to restrain to a position in the 1 wide line however JOONIOR BROWN had improved to his inside obliging him to remain 3 wide. At that point he thought D. Smith on MELODY MAY was looking to obtain cover at the head of the one wide line, however once he went forward it became apparent that was not the case, from that point on he was obliged to race 3 wide. When viewing the vision of the race S. Grace acknowledged there was an opportunity to take a trail in the one wide line in the vicinity of the 1500m because of horses avoiding COME ON SLOOPY which had broken gait. S. Grace admitted that at the time he was unaware the option was there and with hindsight might have been better served had he taken it. S. Grace was advised that in future Stewards would expect him to take full opportunity of options that presented during races in order to avoid action being taken against his licence.

COME ON SLOOPY– hung out raced roughly near the 1600m and broke gait free of interference shortly afterwards. Broke gait free of interference near the 800m, trainer Nick Tardio submitted that he felt the horse is a very nervy claustrophobic horse and he requested permission to remove the blinkers for its engagement at Globe Derby Park on Monday 23rd May as he felt it would settle better when not closed down, Stewards granted permission. A warning was issued for breaking. Nick Tardio was reprimanded under rule 273(6)(b) when it was established the hopple length did not fall within the ½ inch tolerance of the registered length.

Stewards conducted an inquiry into an incident that occurred near the 900m which resulted in DANCING FINN being checked and breaking gait.  After taking evidence from Driver Zac Phillips (ATREACHEROUS) and Driver Ryan Hryhorec (DANCING FINN), viewing the available vision, and taking into account their own observations, it was established that in the front straight with a lap to go DANCING FINN had moved 4 wide on the track to improve around TIDDLY WINX which was being restrained in the three wide line. ATREACHEROUS which had been racing to the inside of TIDDLY WINX shifted to the three wide line once it had obtained clearance ahead of TIDDLY WINX. Having obtained the three wide position Z. Phillips had commenced to restrain ATREACHEROUS with the view of obtaining a trail from DANCING FINN, however ATREACHEROUS began to hang out. R. Hryhorec had also started to restrain to obtain the trail on ATREACHEROUS and despite Z. Phillips taking immediate action to prevent ATREACHEROUS from hanging out it had continued to hang out onto DANCING FINN causing that horse to contact its sulky wheel and break gait for a couple of strides. Stewards were determined the incident had been caused by the manners of ATREACHEROUS in hanging out, a warning was issued.
