Greg Sugars, the driver of Avoca Blues ($1.75 fav) which finished in 4th position, beaten 8.9m explained that his gelding raced keenly and failed to settle in the run which contributed to its beaten margin.

RACE 3 – VALE GAIL SMYTH PACE (1609 MS)

Showem Shifty was examined by the club veterinarian prior to and following the event as a result of the gelding being 13yo and competed in excess of 200 race starts. No abnormalities were detected on either examination.

Blissfull Penny (barrier 9) was out of position at the start when improving onto the back of She Sparkles (barrier 2) which was slow to obtain its barrier position.

Bart Maguire NZ was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight and paced roughly when placed in restricted room to the inside of Master Works which hung in.

Near the 100m, Showem Shifty broke gait when placed under pressure and was placed on its last chance to race truly.

RACE 4 – THE VALE OF AVOCA TROTTERS HANDICAP (2100 SS)

Whatwillbeewellbee NZ (FT Handicap) baulked at the tapes when released and trotted slowly away.

Madeakillin NZ (10m Handicap) trotted roughly after the start and will continue to be excluded from the standing start barrier draw.

Brent Murphy, the driver of Whatwillbeewillbee NZ pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference in that racing towards the 1800m, he permitted his gelding to shift in when not clear of Watch And Act resulting in that gelding being tightened, forced to race inside and contact marker pegs prior to being checked and breaking gait. Mr Murphy had his licence to drive in races suspended for a period of 14 days which was ordered to commence at midnight, Thursday 26 May 2022 and to expire on Friday 10 June 2022 on which day he may drive. When considering penalty Stewards were mindful of Mr Murphy’s guilty plea, driving and offence record in addition to the circumstances attached to the incident.

Chris Alford, the driver of Maestro ($3.4) which finished in 7th position, beaten 15.9m explained that from the 600m, Maestro failed to trot fluently, did not travel and failed to run on as expected. Entering the home straight on the first occasion, Budd Sidewinder was inconvenienced when improving three wide and to the outside of Bettor Star which hung out.

Near the 1150m, All Good jumped a shadow and broke gait resulting in the trailing Terrorleen being checked. The gelding again jumped shadows in the back straight and nearing the 600m, paced roughly before being eased by its driver to finish in 10th position, beaten 91.7m. In view of the performance All Good will now be stood down until it completes one requalifying trial. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Near the 400m, Terrorleen was checked and paced roughly when improving to the inside of Van Gogh which shifted in and away from Budd Sidewinder. As Stewards found this incident was not as a result of careless driving, no further action was taken.

RACE 8 – VALE PETER GRETGRIX PACE (2100 MS)

Fire Official was declared a late scratching at 3:04pm on veterinarian advice when the mare was presented with blood present from the n/side nostril. As the veterinarian was unable to determine that the blood was as a result of trauma, Stewards acting under Rule 101B(2) ordered that Fire Official be stood down from racing until it completes one requalifying trial. Stewards ordered a pre-race blood sample be taken from the mare.

Rinella weakened over the final 900m to finish in 9th position, beaten 244.5m. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. In view of the poor performance, Rinella will now be stood down until it completes one requalifying trial.

Ellen Tormey, the driver of Gauci ($3.90) which finished in 8th position, beaten 23.2m explained that her gelding was unable to handle the pressure and the pace quickening over the final 800m which contributed to the performance of her drive when failing to run on in the home straight.
