ART LEGEND – Broke a near side hopple as the start was effected and a short distance later broke. The gelding was retired from the event near the 900 metres. The gear was inspected and found to be in satisfactory condition. In the circumstances no action was taken.
MURIEL – Pre-race blood sample. Stewards questioned Driver M. Day Jnr in regards to the driving tactics adopted on the mare in particular the reasons for maintaining the lead when challenged by OUR PRINCESS KENNEDY NZ between the 1400 metres and 900 metres. M. Day Jnr stated that the owners had instructed him to attempt to lead the event as the mare had been drawing poorly and therefore has been unable to get into its races recently. M. Day Jnr further added that after obtaining the lead in the early stages he elected to drive his mare forward to maintain the lead as per the instructions issued. M. Day Jnr stated that from the 600 metres his mare was under pressure and considering the amount of work required to do he wasn’t entirely disappointed with the performance. Stewards after considering the evidence advised Driver M. Day Jnr that in their opinion he had erred in his tactics in that he continued to maintain the lead when there was an opportunity to obtain cover and give his horse some respite from the 1000 metres.
BARKWAY MARGARET – Tired over the concluding stages of the event. A warning was issued.
OUR PRINCESS KENNEDY NZ – Post-race swab sample.
