ARDENS ACE NZ– Failed to run on from the 800 metres to be beaten 101 metres and finished in last position. Stewards questioned driver D Binskin in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of the gelding. Driver D Binskin explained that it was in his opinion a sharp rise in grade for the gelding and his runner may not have backed up from its previous start at Menangle on Saturday the 11th June 2022. Mr Binskin added that he was disappointed in the gelding’s performance even considering these factors and felt that something maybe amiss with the horse. Stewards questioned trainer T Bertwistle who confirmed the comments of driver D Binskin and added that the stable would have their stable veterinarian take blood samples from the horse in the coming days for analysis. Stewards will follow up with trainer T Bertwistle on Saturday the 18th of June 2022 in relation to the findings. The gelding was stood down until it completes one re – qualifying trial.

STINGRAY TARA NZ- Pre race blood sample. Worked forward to obtain the lead passing the 2350 metres. Unable to hold the lead passing the 800 metres when placed under driving. Stewards questioned driver J Trainor in relation to the tactics adopted and the performance of the gelding in particular the tempo set whilst leading during the lead time and the first half. Mr Trainor explained that trainer J Grimson had informed him prior to the race to try and obtain the lead as he felt that this would be the geldings best chance of winning today’s event. Mr Trainor stated that STINGRAY TARA NZ was successful in the Renshaw Cup over a similar trip and felt that if able to lead in today’s event it would be advantageous on the smaller half mile track and felt that the gelding was well suited to the small track. Mr Trainor explained that once obtaining the lead he had indicated relatively early when pressured from ARDEN MESSI NZ passing the 2100 metres that the lead was not available however, from that point until approximately the 1850 metres ARDEN MESSI NZ had applied significant pressure however Mr Trainor felt that it would be in his gelding’s best interest to maintain the lead. Mr Trainor stated that once able to establish the lead ARDEN MESSI NZ did race in close proximity to his gelding which resulted in the lead time being recorded faster than he would have liked. Mr Trainor stated that he was disappointed from the 800 metres when STINGRAY TARA NZ was unable to maintain its position considering the recorded sectional times however once crossed with the main body of the field improving towards his outside his gelding was able to muster speed and overall performed relatively well considering the overall run. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Stewards recorded his comments.

ARDEN MESSI NZ– Stewards questioned driver J Gallagher in relation to the tactics adopted and the performance of the gelding. Mr Gallagher explained that he was instructed by trainer K Pizzuto to get out the best he could and position himself in a forward position. Mr Gallagher added that he and trainer K Pizzuto felt that the best chance the gelding had would to make it a staying test if he was unable to obtain the lead and as result was satisfied to sit outside of the leader. Mr Gallagher further explained that although the lead time was quicker than he would have liked, after the challenge for the lead he was satisfied with the tempo set thereafter and was happy with his horse’s performance when being able to improve forward of STINGRAY TARA NZ passing the 800 metres. Mr Gallagher added that from the 800 metres he was able to gain an advantage over the field and tried to maintain that advantage however the early work the gelding had done commenced to tell at approximately the 400 metres and as a result the gelding was placed under significant driving. Mr Gallagher explained that considering the run afforded he was very happy with the horse’s performance in today’s event.
