Trainers with multiple horses engaged in any given race were questioned as to the intended driving tactics to be adopted.
RACE 1 – RADIO BALLARAT TROT (2200 MS)
Shadow Justice (barrier 10) broke gait during the score up and will continue to be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.
Hallaboutme (barrier 2) began badly when galloping away, trailed the field throughout and will now be excluded from the mobile barrier draw. As a result of galloping, Savvy Kyvalley (barrier 9) was inconvenienced after the start.
Dicko Dixon (barrier 11) began badly when galloping away and will continue to be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.
Leaving the back straight on the final occasion In Stride hung in and paced roughly whilst weakening. Given the gelding’s performance which was beaten 52.9m, a warning was issued.
Near the 250m Savvy Kyvalley hung in when improving wide, struck the sulky of Shadow Justice and broke gait.
Near the 100m Shadow Justice broke gait when placed under pressure and free of interference.
Koogan was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
RACE 2 – JACK AND JULES SHOW 3YO MAIDEN TROT (2200 MS)
Brother Joseph (barrier 2) was slow to begin.
Lady Be Lucky (barrier 4) broke gait shortly after the start, trailed the field throughout and will now be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.
Constant hung in throughout the event for which a warning was issued.
Near the 500m Brother Joseph broke gait free of interference. In taking no further action stewards were mindful of the time lapse since the gelding’s previous offence (6/1/22).
RACE 3 – POWER FM TROT (2200 MS)
Trainer John Tormey was questioned as to the late nomination and subsequent withdrawal of Miss Broomfield. After seeking an explanation from Mr Tormey stewards found that the nomination and the subsequent scratching was valid.
Countess Chiron was examined by the club’s veterinarian prior to the event after racing the day prior at Maryborough.
Countess Chiron was held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight.
It was reported that From The West broke its near side lugging pole near the 200m.
RACE 4 – 3BA PACE (2200 MS)
The start of this event was delayed slightly as a result of Caruso Star requiring a replacement sulky due to a flat tyre in the pre-race preliminary.
Rounding the final turn and near the 100m Sapphire Gambler paced roughly. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Driver James Herbertson explained that his gelding was inclined to hang in during event and when improving wider rounding the final turn commenced to pace roughly and was disappointing when failing to finish off the race as well as expected.
RACE 5 – CONGRATULATIONS COLIN HOLLOWAY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD PACE (1710 MS)
Emma Stewart, the trainer of Mosaic Art NZ, was cautioned for failing to have the brand adequately clipped.
Asharah, Malava Miss and Justlikeroyalty were all held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Lookout NZ was held up for clear running for the entire length of the home straight and was not fully tested.
RACE 6 – DECOGLAZE TROT (2200 MS)
Little Yankee (barrier 2) failed to circle prior to the start for which a warning was issued.
One Over All NZ (barrier 5) began badly when galloping away and will now be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.
Geoff Webster, the driver of Bromwich, was cautioned for trailing a wheel between the 1300 and 1100m.
Little Yankee was held up for clear running for the entire home straight and was not fully tested.
All Cashed Up broke gait when placed under pressure over the concluding stages of the event.
Ross Payne, the driver of Chief Runningcloud, was advised that further modification must be displayed with his whip use.
The all clear was delayed to enable stewards an opportunity to review the home straight regarding the 5th placed Aldebaran Kiri contacting and racing to the inside of marker pegs near the 100m. Upon review stewards determined that as Aldebaran Kiri was improving to the inside of Dontouch The Duco it had done so with sufficient clearance however, Aldebaran Kiri overreacted, shifted in, raced inside the line of one marker peg prior to returning to the track surface. As stewards were satisfied that the mare did not gain any advantage the all clear was subsequently announced.
RACE 7 – INTERPATH PACE (2200 MS)
Entering the first turn Major Watson NZ, which had progressed forward, bucked and broke gait before racing outside the leader throughout. Given the gelding’s manners Major Watson NZ will now be stood down until it completes one requalifying trial.
Magic Mike NZ raced keenly during the middle stages.
Major Watson NZ gave ground over the concluding stages inconveniencing Blissfull Stride which was taken back.
Monsieur Delacour was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Geoff Webster, the driver of Elegant, was questioned as to the performance of the filly which finished in 3rd position beaten 7.9m ($1.25 fav). Mr Webster explained that he was required to work harder than anticipated during the early stages as a result of Major Watson NZ improving to his outside and given the distance of the race his filly was found wanting over the concluding stages.
Shannon O’Sullivan, the driver of Monsieur Delacour, was advised that further modification must be displayed with her whip use.
RACE 8 – XTREME TECHNOLOGIES PACE (1710 MS)
Son Of Major (barrier 7) hung in during the score up, was out of position at the start and was placed on its last chance in the mobile barrier draw.
Madeeba was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Modern Bliss was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight prior to shifting ground near the 100m inconveniencing Spot On NZ which was taken up towards Ghost Of Time resulting in both runners being hampered. At a subsequent inquiry Shannon O’Sullivan, the driver of Modern Bliss, was cautioned for shifting ground.
Ryan Sanderson, the driver of Cobber, was questioned as to the performance of the gelding which finished in 4th position beaten 9.5m ($1.60 fav). Mr Sanderson noted his disappointment in the run however was unable to offer any explanation.
A post-race veterinarian examination of Modern Bliss, which was nominated to compete at Melton the night following, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
RACE 9 – BOLTONS 3YO PACE (2200 MS)
Millwood Dior NZ (barrier 2) hung in after the start inconveniencing Dulcie Otoole. A warning was issued.
Craig Demmler, the driver of Millwood Dior NZ, was found guilty of a charge under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference in that on the entry to the first turn he permitted his filly to shift inwards when not clear of Dulcie Otoole resulting in that filly being tightened, checked and lost its rightful running. Mr Demmler had his licence to drive in races suspended for a period of 14 days which was ordered to commence at midnight on Friday 20 May 2022 and to expire on Saturday 4 June 2022 on which day he may drive. When considering penalty stewards took into consideration Mr Demmler’s not guilty plea, driving and offence record, in addition to the low degree of interference that was suffered.
Dulcie Otoole gave ground over the concluding stages to finish in 6th position beaten 57.4m. Given the interference suffered on the entry to the first turn no action was taken against the filly for its performance.
