RACE 2 – DECOGLAZE TROT (2200 MS)
Madena Sky raced keenly during the middle stages of the event.
Xavier O’Connor, the driver of Aldebaran Kiri, was cautioned for careless driving in that near the 600m he permitted his horse to improve and contact the outside sulky wheel of Madena Sky. In taking no further action stewards were mindful that Madena Sky did not suffer a flat tyre as a result.
Approaching the 200m Homonym NZ broke free of interference for which a warning was issued.
RACE 3 – LATHER UP @ WOODLANDS STUD PACE (1710 MS)
Romany Brown (barrier 7) failed to circle prior to the start and was placed on its last chance in the mobile barrier draw.
Brad Chisholm, the driver of Lord Verde NZ ($4.20 – 9th position beaten 16.1m) explained that his gelding travelled well during the run but failed to quicken when obtaining cover from the 400m and raced flat thereafter. Mr Chisholm added that in his opinion the gelding may be coming to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinarian examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with trainer Andy Gath in the coming days.
Romany Brown was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT - 21 JULY 2022
Andy Gath, trainer of Lord Verde NZ advised subsequent to the poor performance at Ballarat on July 16 2022, that the gelding had recovered well. Mr.Gath stated Lord Verde NZ will continue with the current preparation.
RACE 4 – PLOVER SECURITY PACE (2200 MS)
Tango Tara NZ was declared a late scratching at 3.56 pm on veterinarian advice.
Jilliby Chevy raced keenly during the middle stages.
RACE 5 - BALLARAT SOUND PACE (1710 MS)
Soextra was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Belmont Royale NZ was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Connor Clarke, the driver of Belmont Royale NZ, was questioned as to his driving over the concluding stages after initially being held up on the back of Tuppence, an opportunity was available leaving the 100m to improve to that runner’s inside. Mr Clarke explained that after entering the home straight, Tuppence held its line whilst leading and although positioned in a pocket to the inside of Yankee Gold NZ, he continued to look towards his outside in an attempt to obtain clear running. Mr Clarke stated that when alert to Tuppence shifting ground later in the straight, he took the inside run and finished off the race relatively well given the short run to the line. Mr Clarke added that on review of the vision, he is accepting that the run available to the inside of Tuppence was available a short distance earlier and was not alert to that fact when driving. On review stewards determined that at no stage in the early stages of the home straight Tuppence had shown any tendency to shift wider and this supported the view of Mr Clarke. Stewards also considered that it was reasonable to find at this point of the event that the only opportunity for clear running would be to the outside. It was further found that although a run was available earlier and Mr Clarke had erred in failing to take that run when first available, this error taking into consideration all the circumstances, was not considered blameworthy. Notwithstanding the stewards findings, Mr Clarke was advised that in future he must be more aware of his surroundings and take all opportunities when they are available in a more timely manner.
RACE 6 – WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP (1ST HEAT) (2200 MS)
Captain Confetti NZ was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Rounding the first turn and for some distance into the back straight American Legacy NZ, which was racing keenly, improved on to the back of Monsieur Delacour contacting its sulky resulting in its off side tyre being flattened. On review steward noting the manners of American Legacy NZ did not consider Mr Butt to have displayed any careless driving and also found that during this stage of the event Connor Clarke, the driver of Monsieur Delacour, had also eased the pace from its positioning in the running line.
RACE 7 – JOHN SLACK MEMORIAL TROTTERS CUP (GROUP 2) (2200 MS)
Brent Lilley, the trainer of Robbie Royale NZ and Kyvalley Chief NZ, was cautioned for failing to notify stewards of the intended tactics for both runners.
James Herbertson, the driver of Nephew Of Sonoko (barrier 8), was fined $100 under Rule 162(1)(j) for failing to maintain his correct position on the second line prior to the starting point.
Near the 150m Sundons Courage broke gait free of interference.
Brandlo Prince was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight prior to obtaining a run to the inside of Kyvalley Chief NZ which hung out under pressure. Upon review stewards accepted that Anthony Butt, the driver of Kyvalley Chief NZ, had made reasonable attempts to straighten however Brandlo Prince had improved quickly to his inside and therefore an opportunity to close down was no longer available.
Well Defined NZ was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
RACE 8 – WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP (2ND HEAT) (2200 MS)
High Flying Harry NZ (barrier 4) broke gait during the score up, was out of position at the start and will now be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.
