JUSTROLLINGAROUND – Checked from behind the tiring MAJOR MONTY NZ approaching the 400 metres.

SHOOIN – Sulky contacted by OUR SAMS HOME entering the first turn. At a subsequent inquiry, Driver A Richardson pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference, in that entering the first turn, he made insufficient effort to prevent his runner from shifting in, when not sufficiently clear of OUR SAMS HOME, which was tightened for room, contacted his sulky wheel and was checked and broke gait. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account A Richardson’s guilty plea, his good driving record with regards to this rule and the particular circumstances of the incident. Driver A Richardson had his license to drive in races suspended for a period of 14 days, to commence at midnight the 12th of August.

MAJOR MONTY NZ – Raced three wide from the start until working forward to obtain the position outside the leader near the 1200 metres. Continued to work forward to take over the lead from JUSTROLLINGAROUND near the 800 metres. Tired over the concluding stages of the race. Driver M Towers, with S Towers assisting her in the inquiry, was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding, in particular after racing three wide rounding the first turn until obtaining the position outside the leader near the 1200 metres, her continuing to work her runner forward to obtain the lead near the 800 metres. M Towers stated that prior to the race her intended tactics were to work forward from the start in an attempt to obtain a forward position, preferably the lead, as she was of the view the gelding races best when able to lead and felt in tonight’s field would be competitive if it was able to get to that position. She added she felt the gelding got to the position outside the leader under its own steam and continued to allow it to roll forward as she felt at the time that her runner was going to be able to sustain its run. S Towers further added that in hindsight, when able to review the times she had asked her runner to run during that stage of the race, she felt she had erred in continuing to progress forward to the lead, and that had resulted in her runner commencing to tire after leaving the 600 metres. Stewards were of the view that the drive was below the standard required, however given M Towers’ relative inexperience, this being just her 13th race drive, issued a reprimand under Rule 149(2) for driving in a manner which in the opinion of the Stewards was unacceptable and referred her to the HRNSW Driver Mentoring Program.
